Currently my desktop has the relatively aging case, CM Storm Scout 1.. I am looking at upgrading my graphics card and have my eyes set on the MSI 970 GTX card.. Only reason why I am torn on getting it currently is the card's size.. The Maximum clearance for my case (with out modification) is 270mm.. The MSI card JUST fits in at 269mm length, and the power connectors are on the side.. So based on this, it should work right? I just want to make sure before I order it, only to find out that it gets caught on something to prevent fitting in the case..

Why not remove the hard drive cages? That is what I did with my smaller PC.

If not, that is cutting it pretty close.

That's really tight, remove the HDD cage if it's in a way. If you can't then you can always mod it yourself.

As previous was suggested - remove the HDD bays, unless you're using more than 3 HDDs there's no reason for that wasted space, if you remove it you'll have better air flow.

You should be fine with that TWIN FROZR V GPU.

Not all cases have removable HDD bays and the 2009 CM Scout does not (unless you fancy taking a hacksaw to it...) That card will be a very tight squeeze, if you do buy one let me know if it fits as I have that case and the video card clearance is a major limitation

I just installed the MSI 970 gtx in the case.. It fits fine and it was no hassle what so ever.. It seriously looks like I still have maybe a centimeter of room before it would hit the drive walls.. You honestly probably could get the longer Asus 970 gtx strix to fit in there too (though it would be cutting it real close)..
