Hi. I have at the moment Corsair Vengeance Low Profile 8GB Kit 2 sticks at 4GB each. If I got another 2 to go up to 16GB would I have to have windows pro instead of home edition?.

Home Premium is enough but make sure it's 64bit

You can actually go up to 32GB so long as your motherboard supports it but you won't notice any difference. Stay at 16GB.

Yes, 16 gb is a plenty, but if I were you I would stick with 8 gb right now (assuming you are just gaming). I upgraded to 16 gb from 8gb because I do work with Adobe software, but I am not sure it was worth it. Just my two cents.

I would say 16GB is the sweet spot nowadays. But also, DDR4 will be coming along soon so it might not make much sense to buy a lot of RAM right now.

Watch out.

With Windows 7 Home Premium you can't go more than 16GB!!!

But anyway 16GB is already an overkill for gaming, 32GB is good only for RAMDISK. :)

From my experience, the answer is no. You are more likely to see improvements from upgrading your CPU or GPU (depending on what you are running now). I strongly believe 8 gb of ram will be enough for games in the mid-term.

DDR4 is on its way, but it will have more power benefits than speed benefits, when compared to DDR3 (based on what i have read).

@Coseniath:

That's what I thought. I didn't no if it couldn't do 16 or 32 with out going pro. Think I will wait and see what directX12 and as you say DDR4Rams will be like and just buy another PC at that time with latest stuff in and make sure its Pro version of windows I get.

I am asking because I am getting the turn some windows apps off to improve performance or what ever it says when in certain games. Just thought if I get more ram it would improve it a little.

16GB is pretty awesome but to be honest I only need it for running really complex flow simulations in SolidWorks. I haven't noticed any advantages in gaming. Maybe if you use mods with really high resolution textures. I can see 16GB becoming standard for gaming when higher resolutions become more available; right now 8 seems okay for all the games out there.

That affects the VRAM, not system RAM.

I have 8 GB, and unless I'm doing heavy video or audio creation and editing I have enough.

12 GB 2400 Mhz, I don't see a need for anymore yet used it for Pro Tools (audio creation) and new games.

I'd say 16GB is good if you're a hardcore gamer and want a bit of future proofing, especially because of next gen console ports. Some games require 6GB so that's getting pretty close to the 8GB mark. Ram is pretty damn cheap nowadays anyways.

I would save your money. 8 GB is perfectly enough for gaming.
