Monitor talk...I'm shopping. Disappointed w/ IPS!!

Sorry for another monitor topic but I'm having a hard time here deciding what to do.

My 4 year old Samsung tn has a better picture than this ips. I'm taking it back today and considering ordering another tn that's 120hz as seen here:

I just don't see the advantage in IPS unless it's a higher res....an I wrong or missing something? Does that LG I bought just suck or what....I don't get it.

Also, I don't see how IPS is good for gaming, I know it's great for workstations.

For gaming you'd want something with lowest ms as possible with highest refresh rate like the new Asus monitors with the 144Hz + 1ms

If you are referring to the colors produced than maybe mess with settings on the display because from what I hear IPS clearly has better colors.

Also if you your 4 year old Samsung is small and has a decent res it maybe more clear than a 27in 1080p monitor when both are very close. Maybe consider the Asus 1440p monitor with IPS for $550 or the 144hz Asus recommended above.

If 1440p is what you want and price is to high get a catleap, qnix, crossover display for $300-350. They are now on Newegg and Amazon and the buyers say the sellers have great customer support. I warn you though they are usually pretty feature-less and may have a couple dead pixels. These are $1000 displays that did not pass strict inspection byt are usually very nice for the money

Most reviews said lag was not an issue...looking forward to it. Video card will take a hit but maybe if I keep aa off it will be alright.

I did say various times that it depended on model with gaming, when everyone just suggests IPS cause they think it's the best there is without question.

I would have gone with that BenQ you posted a few days back, the gaming one. Doesn't matter if it's 144Hz, it's a good monitor.

Yes you did and you were right.

That said I think the one I ended up with (the Dell) was a good pick. The BenQ from what I was readying had issues with looking washed out.

That said, you're right, the model itself is more important than type of monitor.

The Dell Ultrasharp Series are great models, we have an older version at work and it looks great.

Hopefully the higher resolution doesn't take a toll.

Yeah I had heard a lot of good things about Dell monitors...though I don't care at all for their PCs.

Should had went with gloss for better pq. Still it should be better than TN.

I got here late but yeah, you'll be fine with the monitor you ordered. IPS in general is a better tech but that doesn't mean that every cheap IPS will be better than every high end TN. Dells in general are pretty high quality if you stick to their higher end lines. I have 7 Dell monitors and three of them are the non-LED version of what you got (u2711) and they are awesome. Some will argue that 120hz is better than IPS for competitive FPS gaming but for most gaming IPS is great.

There are color profiles you should test with your monitor, from here. Windows 7 and 8 sometimes automatically assign weird color profiles to specific monitors.

Also, some people have different ideas of what looks better. Your idea of what looks better might be saturated colors and heightened brightness. IPS Panels are better delivering accurate colors - the colors you were actually intended to be seeing - but you might think it doesn't look as good as a big, bright, saturated monitor (you'd probably think it's more vibrant and the IPS is washed out).

EDIT: Also, I probably wouldn't opt for 1920x1080 at 27" - it's a rather low pixel density. LG isn't really one of the best brands either...

Op do some research before you buy something from what I read 1080 IPS have a slight blurring effect.. I have an Asus Pb278Q I have yet to personally view a panel that has better colors and looks nicer then it though I'm sure they exist. It is a PLS not an IPs, but they are almost the same thing.

Yes, I have the newest 30" Ultrasharp and it actually makes the old ones look alot worse because of their coating. The only downside is on a pure black screen on your desktop you will get some corner bleed because its side lit. Otherwise if your in programs or games its not noticable. Also for anyone looking to get the newest Ultrasharp make sure its revision 3.

So LOL back at you and by the way this monitor is freaking amazing. So yeah....happy I got it.

well, out of the gates there are not "just" IPS and TN panels, there are alot of sub categories, and while the Whole "IPS are just better" floating around becuase it was the nice new shiney Word, it often times was and is not true.

As someone else said though, it also depends on what you are looking for. I HAVE seen IPS monitors that simply looked fantastic, I would rarely consider them to game on, as they could have some delay going on. Not only with the refresh rates.

On the flip sidethere are TN panels that can beat IPS panels despite alot of people claiming it is impossible.

my SA950 looks better then a good deal of IPS Panels, despite alot of people claiming mpossible, it is not as not all IPS are quite as good as people say.

On the flipside I can also find IPS panels that looks better then the SA 950, and has a fast enough refresh.

Point being that of both types of panels you might find utter shit. Thinking that TN panels automatically makes the monitor refresh faster and have lower input lag is as dumb, as beliving that all IPS panels automatically has the superior Picture.

Not paying for the size of the screen.....it's a quality thing. Some people pay for it and some can't....to each his own.

Name brand 27 inch screen 1440/1600p monitors (viewsonic, LG, Dell, Asus, Ben Q....ect) go for $500-800.......... ($550 for an ultrasharp 1440p monitor is a decent price).

Price is normal for what it is (1440p IPS) and there has always been a decent asking price for resolutions that aren't the standard (lets not pretend like this is rocket science).

He's just being a hater. I also bought a 27" IPS LG 1080 set this week and it was $300+. This Dell set was worth the $250 extra.

Apple's 27-inch is 1000 dollars.

But it's got some lightning fast USB 2.0 ports! :D

I'm really glad to hear that the set worked out for you. I don't think I've heard of anyone being disappointed by their Dell monitors.

I have almost the same LG monitor you got there but mine is slightly older discontinued model, but I havent had any problems with it yet. So far it's been one of the better 27 inch 1080p monitors i've had... i had a Benq monitor but it had some strange color lag in games so i stopped using it.

The IPS on my LG monitor is so-so. It has very good left and right angle viewing, but if I view mine at the top angle, i see color distorting and same with if i view it from the bottom angle... it has kinda a blue-ish tint from those angles... so its not as good as IPS can be... I have a 1000 dollar Dell monitor with IPS which i can view from any angle imaginable and it looks exactly the same at all angles. So the LG IPS is a bit of a marketing ploy, its nowhere near the quality it could be, but its still acceptable for the cheapness i paid for it (got this monitor on sale for 215 dollars)... plus your not gonna view the monitor at extreme top or low angles for the most part.

I did spend many hours testing different color/brightness/contrast settings until i had it the best i could get. Doesnt sound like you spent much time testing it out... but thats ok. Hopefully that Benq is much better, it should be good since its 120hz i guess.

I actually prefer this monitor in some ways over my Dell U2711... its actually easier on the eyes because of its low input lag, and its brightness isnt as hard on the eyes. Although for image editing, i do prefer the Dell since its colors are much deeper, bright and accurate.
