Mechanical and non-Mechanical Keyboards?

I know it's a noob question but what's the difference between the two? In fact what even are they? I'm a total noob when it comes to peripherals so please will somebody explain?

@i_return: generally mechanical require less pressure and give better feedback for each press. If you can handle the slight tapping noise I'd always recommend mechanical. :)
