Anyone know any sci-fi games that are really atmospheric and suspensful, and focus less on action and more on narrative? (other than Myst series) Or recommend a really good non sci-fi thriller/suspense game?

Not much narrative....but Dead Space gets as atmospheric and suspenseful as possible...

You could try Riddick: Dark Athena (i.e. the updated gfx version of Escape from Butcher Bay)

Mass Effect! Lots of dialogue in that game. Also there is a lot of cool universe related information in the "Codex" section.

I don't think mass effect is very atmospheric or suspensful, but it has a very strong movie-like narrative. Dead Space is atmospheric, suspensful with a good narrative - but it has a lot of action (like mass effect) Stalker is very atmospheric but not so strong on the narrative I guess. Bioshock is fairly atmospheric too, especially at the start. most of these games have lots and lots of action.

System Shock 2 or Homeworld, both are fantastic. I'd also recommend Mass Effect if you want a more modern game.

System Shock 2 just might be an excellent suggestion for you .. it truly delivers on the fronts you're looking for .. however the game may prove to be too difficult to acquire.

This is where Bioshock would come in, and try to coax you to experience the new improved interpretation of System Shock 2, under water. But many may say no, which is fine .. it's not space .. so it becomes a more earthly science fiction experience .. a period piece too (takes place in the 60's ?)

But How-About this - Dead Space .. this is fully unique sci-fi/horror in space .. you get full on zero-gravity action .. this is classic stuff.

give it a try ;)

thanks for the suggestions! yep, beat Bioshock (awesome), and I'm playing Dead Space right now - I expected it to be more story and less console-type action, but oh well, its still good. I like action games, but I often want something truly immersing and suspenseful - looks like I may have to check out Riddick. And right now I'm thinking either Cryostasis or the Penumbra series...but I think I'll check em both out :) .

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernobyl

Fallout 2

System Shock 2

Bioshock

Metro 2033

Resident Evil 4

Deus Ex

all of the above fit the requirements rather nicely.

Hard to think of any that are light on action. The new Frictional game that was teased today would be perfect but its a ways off.

I will also say Mass effect. I recommend starting with the first one and working your way to the third one. One of the most immerse games I have ever played in its genera. The S.T.A.L.K.E.R game he said is also well worth a look at. But ill just list off some of the ones I liked.

Doom 3

The fallout series

Star Wars Knights of the old republic and squeal the sith lords.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

Metro 2033

All the half life games

The resident evil series.

some of these do focus on action but and some more based around action but all are immersive IMO. Yeah a few of these are older games but still very good games.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is right up your alley. The original Deus Ex would also be there if you do not mind playing a dated game.

It might not be the type of game you're looking for, but Kerbal Space Program really gets you interested in space exploration. Such a wonderful game.. but yeah Mass Effect, Dead Space, and Fallout are very great as well. Also check out STALKER, Metro, Bioshock, Half-Life 2, and The Walking Dead are great to get invested in.
