Pentium D's are crap, don't get one. Your best bet for a budget combo would be a Brisbane core Athlon 64 X2 and a cheap AM2 motherboard. The Brisbane core X2 is on a 65nm die, so it is an excellent overclocker...-GeordiLaForge-:| the pd 945 r 65nm 2 n achieve 4.2 or more speed, + they run soooo cool mine never ever passed 41 under load.

Hmm, I can't say for sure, but the X2 should run cooler. It uses 30 less watts of power, which is where the heat comes from. Either way, I shouldn't have been so harsh against the Pentium D. Hell, I still have a single core processor. But for gaming, the 65nm X2 really is a much better choice...
