Hello everyone!

I'm currently in the process of building a PC, and I have a bit of dilemma here. I can't decide between the 4670K and its K-less sister. I'm on a budget and would rather put the money into a better GPU.

So I guess my question is, does overclocking result in a significant difference in terms of gaming performance? Keep mind that I will probably be using a decent GPU, most likely the R9 280x.

And I'm sorry if this is the wrong forum. Gamespot has really f*cked up with the new design.

Yeah go for the 4670k. It's worth the extra.

It's only £10 difference, that's not going to get you a better graphics card.

And for the K version to be worth it, get a Z87 mobo, or no OC for you.

Which mobo have you had in mind?

I currently own 280X and i5 4670 not the K version; I own as well Noctua C14 one of the best CPU fans, I took it just to be safe that my CPU won't burn.

If you're planning to OC your CPU then you've got to own a good CPU fan/Water cooling; you said you're on a budget as well; so plan carefully if it's worth getting the K version.

if you can afford at least this CPU http://www.amazon.com/Noctua-CPU-Cooler-NH-U12P-SE2/dp/B002TG3K14/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1385379500&sr=8-1&keywords=u12p

then go for the K version.

This as well the Z mobos are a must and they're overall more expensive ones.

@PredatorRules: You don't need to spend $70 on a CPU cooler for moderate overclocks.

I has an unlocked multiplier, which is necessary for any meaningfull overclocking.

The other has VT-D, which allows fx video passthrough in a virtual machine. I.e. You can play Windows games in VMs in Linux, although that's not at all what it's meant for ;)

Even if you don't overclock, it's still worth it to get a cheap aftermarket cooler, just for the sake of noise.

@PredatorRules: Still 30% more money than a 212 evo yet with a smaller fan.

As far as gaming performance I doubt overclocking will help at all. If you're not going to spend the extra money on a z87 mobo then don't bother. You'd be better off putting that money into something else.

There's no reason to get the K model unless you are overclocking.

For my case where I don't overclock, I would get the non-K model.

It makes a big difference, I find BF4 too juttery with my 2500k at stock.

Not even sure if that's a word, but that's what it feels like.

TC's asking about the 4670. According to the benchmarks at Anandtech it's about 20% faster than the 2500K. I wouldn't expect it to make much of a difference. I've heard others say the same about BF4 so that may be an exception. Hard to say how much hardware requirements will change in the next couple years though but I can't imagine any games would require a high end CPU to play smoothly.

Hello guys, appreciate the replies.

Fry's is selling i5 3570K and MSI Z77A-G41 combo for $188 after rebate on Thanksgiving , whaddya think?

I'm very tempted to go with this offer, especially that it will cost less than a single 4670K.

Here's the flyer

I think I will. I've read this motherboard isn't all that great for OC'ing, but I probably won't even go past 4.2GHz anyways. I'll just buy this bundle and a decent aftermarket CPU fan and call it a day.

LOL Fry's servers crashed and the combo was gone in a matter of seconds. Looks like 4670K it is.
