its not that unbelievable, the 7970 has 4300 or so, so the 8970 or the 780 having ~1000 more transistors wouldn't be too far fetched.

You do realize some of the specs are actually confirmed... like max number of shaders and the size of the memory interface.
Heck, you can also pretty easily narrow down the clocks to small range.
