Ive been using this Phenom 2 X4 955 @ 3.6 ghz for 4 years, its given me wonderful performance over the years for a great price in 2010. With me upgrading to my GTX 760 late last year some game's performance did improve some and others didnt hardly change from GTX 560. So im looking on buying an i5 4690k with a Gigabyte Z97 based board, still haven't decided on which model, Z97X SLI, GIGABYTE GA-Z97X-UD3H, or GIGABYTE GA-Z97X- Gaming 5 or 7 models.
I would love to buy another AMD CPU but their performance per clock is no better then my Phenom 2 and even then the games have to use 6 or 8 threads to see a real improvement over ones using 1-4 threads.
I remember playing Crysis 3 while using my old Phenom II x4 965 and the first time you get to the section with the field of grass dropped my frame rate to the low 20s and it was my CPU being bottlenecked for once.
I Picked up an i7 4770k for 260USD and a Noctua NH-D14 for 60USD last month.
Also picked up an Asus Maximus VI Hero for 118USD.
I mainly went for the i7 for video editing and compression and for that it makes quite the difference.
The intel cpus are a must for emulating certain games on the Dolphin like Xenoblade and The Last Story so there was another big difference I noticed going from a Phenom II x4 965 to an i7 4770k.
Although the Haswell CPU's runs super hot.....
When stressed out at 100% usage, my CPU at 4.0ghz and 1.2v gets up to the high 60s in Celsius while using the Noctua NH-D14.
And when it's a very hot day with no air conditioning I see the temps rise to the low 70s when it's at 100% usage.
On the bright side,"winter is coming" and I can save money with keeping the heater off because my computer does that job just fine.
