OK, I can't ignore it anymore.

I firstly read about it as a rumor in a rumor based site but now, 4 hardware sites have post this as a rumor, while they usually completely ignore this.

Techspot: GM200-based GeForce GTX 980 Ti reportedly coming this summer

TechpowerUp: NVIDIA Readying GM200-based GeForce GTX 980 Ti

VideoCardz: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti to be released ‘after summer’

Guru3D: GeForce GTX 980 Ti has 3072 CUDA Cores and 6GB of GDDR5

I have to classify this as a rumor, but the info available sums up to the idea that Nvidia will be releasing a GeForce GTX 980 Ti that has 3072 Shader Cores and 6GB of GDDR5.

That means it will be based on Big-Maxwell aka GM200 that currently resides in the Titan X released last week. If true then this would be an awesome release. 6GB (384-bit) is plenty enough and the GPU more than fast enough. There is one more speculation, the card would be FASTER clocked compared to the Titan X, by 10%.

So if AMD releases something upcoming summer, they know what they can expect from Nvidia. Btw being a non Titan model, board partners should be able to com up with their own designs and factory overclocks as well.

Lets assume this chart here is right. What is the point with Titan X? It doesn't have increased double precision, just twice the amount of memory. And for that it can cost 300$ more?

I'm assuming they are just waiting for AMD's launch first.

Well those $300 can give you 3 months earlier and an advantage in 3 (maybe 2 too) way SLI.

:P

@horgen: TBH I don't think the Titan X was ever designed to be a sensible choice to plug any given gap in the market. It strikes me as a PR exercise to keep an air of quality around Nvdia products. And TBH that kind of thing isn't entirely unheard of.

Nice. Maybe instead of going SLI 980GTX, I should upgrade to a Ti first before going to SLI. 6gb of VRAM with a SLI setup at 1440P sounds a lot more futureproof than 4gb.

Can you use EVGA's step up program?

It's what I have been waiting for since my 780 Ti died.

The Titan X is pretty much a novelty item, its what you get for the sake of having... 12GB is pretty ridiculous. The 980 Ti will pretty much perform the same at every resolution including 4K 6GB is more than enough.

I wish. I bought my GTX 980 the second it launched. I really don't care that much - if I sold my card right now I could easily get ~$475. I'll just think of it like an inexpensive rental ($75 for 9 months of use or whatever).

It's a never-ending money pit though. It probably wouldn't hurt if I just bought another GTX 980 to SLI with. I'd at least get more for my dollar.

The point of the TItan cards is, and always has been: making people spend 1000 dollars on a video card.

I'd imagine pretty fuckin good. They have the best videocard out there. There are always better cards that will come out. If you bought a Titan X, money is obviously not much of a concern.

I don't think AdamK47 is too worried. He just bought 4 TItan X and he has his 4 old GTX 980 laying beside them...

@KHAndAnime: 2 would probably be better heard double sli is more stable than triple or quad sli. Even at 8K gaming I don't think you would need near that many Gb lol

With over 100MHz on the core, both as stock and boost, this card should be beating Titan by what... 8-10%?

Well the win here is not only that it will have 10% more Mhz with reference, but that it can have custom cooling from Asus, EVGA, Gigabyte, MSI etc etc.

So we will add +10%-20% more clocks to a massive 20-30% increase in Mhz. Stock boost clock is 1075. Maxwell GPUs can easily go to 1300-1400 Mhz only with factory default settings.

So expect a much higher than 8-10% performance jump.

ps: Don't forget that MSI denied releasing a Lightning GPU with GTX980 cause they said they want to use it on the true flagship that will come later...

Understandable. It's a mean move from nVidia. They could have told them that they have a fully enabled chip as well.

They released Lightning parts on lower models in the past (I can remember GTX275 and GTX680) but last time didn't had the time to sell their Lightning models I guess.

@Coseniath: I got the MSI Twin Frozr one and I have never seen 1147 as core clock. Boost on stock was supposed to be 1124, mine usually stopped by 1137 or so, and sometimes went up 1152.

You can say that about any video card. They are all outdated a week after release it seems. The Titan X is for enthusiast who like to Overclock and Fold. They also get it months earlier. By the time the 980 Ti releases Nvidia will not care about the Titan X anymore as it will have already served its purpose and targeted the community it was meant to target.

I'm not sure why Nvidia should bother with the Titan series anymore. Now the GTX 980 Ti matches the Titan X and it's cheaper - why would anyone buy the Titan? That 12GB memory of Titan X is pretty pointless, you'll never use all of that memory and that's the only advantage the Titan X has over the 980 Ti...

I guess Titan X owners are pretty mad right now. I'd be mad too if I were them.

I am perfectly happy with my 2 GTX 970s for now.

Even when the GTX 980ti releases I still think the 970s will be a better bang for buck.

If anyone has at least a 780 or higher GPU then they should just skip the 980ti and wait for Pascal next year which will be the true big change.

I doubt there will be many demanding games in that 18 months that will make a 780 crawl to it's knees unless you play as very high resolutions with high AA.

Even the Witcher 3 seems to run at 60fps at 1080 maxed on a 780ti so a regular 780 should be able to get around 45 fps and a bit higher when oced which should be good enough.

The only worrying bit is the 3GB of vRAM but I still think not many games will take advantage of more vRAM unless you use a higher resolution with more AA.

I doubt Pascal will release at the end of 2016 but rather near the beginning in march.

Well I do got the 680, not 780 or better... But also going through older games that aren't so demanding... That I can max or at least play on high at 3440*1440 or 2560*1440.

By the time the 980 Ti releases Nvidia will not care about the Titan X anymore as it will have already served its purpose and targeted the community it was meant to target.

Yeah, but at least last time, the 780 didn't do better. We had to wait for 780 Ti, which AMD forced to be released.

Well technically the 980Ti will not do better, at least at 4k and Folding. PC enthusiast will pay $100s more for just a few frames per second when competing for benchmarks. It's just the nature of the hobby, not unlike people spending $1000s extra for 8-10 extra HP when dealing with vehicles if they are constantly into Dyno tuning. If you look at all the websites that sale the Titan X, it was sold out everywhere for 2 weeks straight and still is in a lot of places. Nvidia has already made there money off the product and will not care about it in 3 more months.

However for 99% of us, me and you including the 980ti will absolutely destroy the Titan X in performance to dollar ratio even moreso than the 970 and 980.

How will the 980Ti not do better, unless it is limited by VRAM?

The double precision is butchered unlike the original Titan.

@Coseniath: if that is VRAM usage... What is wrong with COD AW?

This is from W1zzard at TechpowerUp(the guy that invented ASIC quality I think):

Modern games use various memory allocation strategies, and these usually involve loading as much into VRAM as fits even if the texture might never or only rarely be used. Call of Duty: AW seems even worse as it keeps stuffing textures into the memory while you play and not as a level loads, without ever removing anything in the hope that it might need whatever it puts there at some point in the future, which it does not as the FPS on 3 GB cards would otherwise be seriously compromised.

If those specs are true then that's definitely the card to get.

Ah. Lazy coding. That's something new.
