i was thinking the 8800 might have an edge because of dx10...but i dunno

and can 7950 play dx10 games and can 8800 play dx9 games?

You need to get a 8800 to play games with DX10.

The 8800GTX is better than the 7950X2 in every way.

The 8800's can play DX9 and 10 games, and can run games with DX10 Features.
The 7950 can play DX9 and 10 Games, but cannot run DX10 Features, so will always play games in DX9 mode.  Benchmarks wise, the 8800's are better than the 7950's also.  If you were trying to decide which to buy, there's not question.  An 8800 card (preferably GTX) would be the best choice.

How can a 7950 run dx10 games? It can't. It will be able to run games that are made for DX9 and 10, but that is the case for every DX9 card. Definetly go with an 8880 though...

Who knows if it will be able to play dx10 games or not... there are no dx10 games out now. You can play alot of dx9 games on dx8 graphics cards, like FEAR has an option allowing dx8 effects instead of dx9 effects.

Here ya go, courtesy of tomshardware:

That will give you an idea of how much of a performance gain it is to take a single 8800 GTX, haha it makes Oblivion "playable" at that resolution and setting hehe.

I'm pretty sure that the quad SLI drivers are still terrible. Since an Nvidia 8800GTX will be more powerfull, have Dx10 and be cheaper than 2 7950GX2  then your best bet is to get the 8800GTX.

Umm... are you serious?  Are you suggesting that the 7950 won't be able to run Crysis or something?  Because if you're just talking about games made ONLY for DX10, there will be NO GAMES that are solely DX10 for several years.  If a company made a game that REQUIRED DX10 now, it would be financial suicide.  So, to re-affirm what I said before:

You CAN play DX9 and DX10 games with a 7950, but only in DX9 mode.
You CAN play DX9 and DX10 Games with an 8800, and with DX10 Games it will run in DX10.  However, you will require Windows Vista in order to do this as XP is not compatible with DX10.

lol I hope so.  He probably thought I was saying the 7950 could play DX10 only games, which don't even exist yet and won't for several years :P, god damn miscommunication!!!

eh, just forget it. :p I was basically saying the same thing you are, but trying to point out that in a case of a game supporting dx9/10, dx10 is a non issue if you are using any DX9 card. (including a 7950gx2)
