Hi looking for alittle help, I'm in the market to purchase some new headphones. Currently settled on either the Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro or AKG K701's. I have a Asus Xonar D2X soundcard i bought with my PC about 5-6 months ago. This soundcard doesnt have a built in amp, so im looking for a headphone amp to be a line through from soundcard to headphones.

I don't really know what is a good amp or not, I know i don't need a DAC with it. Was looking at the FiiO E10 but this comes with a built in DAC so started looking at the FiiO E11 but it is portable which i wouldnt be using.

Can anyone recommend a good desktop Amp under £100 that can be used in conjunction with a PC soundcard?

Thanks.

Fiio E11 would be fine, doesn't matter that it is portable, it could still be used with the mains power all the time.

There is also this: http://epiphany-acoustics.co.uk/products-page/headphone-amplifiers/ehp-o2-portable-headphone-amplifier/

O2 amplifier, currently 88.99 would also be a great choice. I see that the E11 is currently £54 on Amazon so maybe just get that.

From what I understand E11 cannot be used while charging and battery life is not that great so you have to keep unpluggin it and plugging it back after 7-8 hours of use which is far from ideal for a desktop amp also doesn't have the output power to fully power the more demanding headphones. I didn't release you could get the O2 for that price in europe tc should defiantly go for the O2 amp then will pair well with any impedance headphone high or low and has enough power to drive pretty much any headphone on the market.

Get the O2, trust me, listening to it right now, its amazing. I have a FiiO E11, and the O2 is SO much better. Also, I just compared the 2, no contest. O2 is liquidy smooth, and the guitar and voice's are so much better. Sounds a lot more dynamic.

I have the DT 990 pro 250 ohm headphones and my Fii0 E11 powers them perfectly. Coupled with a Xonar DX soundcard

You should get a O2, I did a FiiO E11 vs. O2 with my Beyer DT880 250 ohm, and there was no contest.

I'd look into getting the FiiO E17. It's a little more expensive but it accepts optical, which is very rare for an amp that size.

No one knows about the shiit magni? It's $99 and has VERY similar performance to an O2.

If the specs on the site are true it looks like a great amp for a low price but I don't think you can get it shipped to europe for cheaper then the O2 he listed.

Just came back to the thread to see new posts, had a chuckle to myself as I was just on Schiit website today. Will be picking up the Asgard to pair up with the HiFiMAN HE-400.

Oh man, i just got my he-400 like last week. Fantastic cans. My schiit M&M also came in yesterday, just waiting on the rca cables. Apparently, the differences between the M&M stack and higher end amp/dac combo's from schiit are pretty marginal, so i still stand by recommending the M&M.

Yeah the HE-400 aren't that picky about the amp. I've tried them with several different setups and using a Dacmagic Plus myself, but the source doesn't change them by much.

Even Jason said that the Asgard + Bifrost DESTROYED the M&M, come on, Darth.

Is this your view of "destroy"? And obviously this Jason is going to say it's much better since it's his company  I'd be ready to bet some money on that you couldn't blind test the M&M and A&B correctly especially with cans like the HE-400.

While i have one and like it, i wouldn't say it's suitable for desktop use since it's battery powered, you'd end up ruining the battery if you left it plugged in, or have to keep plugging and unplugging it.

GUYS, THE ASGARD + BIFROST IS GOING TO BE BETTER. Even if it was an hyperbole it has to be some what true.

Not going to dig up the quote, but somebody said the Asgard has much more emotion and more clear.

Can't really go wrong for £20, that's why I bought one.
