I built this PC myself in Nov 2009 and nothing has been upgraded yet. I spent alot of money on it at the time.

CPU: Intel Core i7-860 Lynnfield Quad-Core 2.8GHz LGA 1156 95W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115214

VIDEO CARD: XFX HD-587A-ZNF9 Radeon HD 5870 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150443

MOBO: ASUS P7P55D PRO LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131405

RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231279

CASE: Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129021

PSU: Antec TruePower New TP-750 750W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371025

Win 7 64 bit OS

500 GB HD

I want to be able to play games like Shadows of Mordor and Dragon Age: Inq on HIGH-ULTRA

Here is what I ended up doing.

NEW VIDEO CARD: Sapphire Radeon R9 270X Video Card - 4GB GDDR5 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8573338&CatId=7387 Final Price = $110

NEW RAM: G.SKILL Sniper 8GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231416 Final Price = $60

Total Upgrades = $170 How'd I do?

Also what are some things I need to know before upgrading when the parts arrive, like should I uninstall my video drivers or anything else?

Could've gone with Ripjaws X 2133/2400Mhz for the same price. (not a difference in gaming but in case you'll want to edit stuff)

GPU is good.

You should download latest driver for the new GPU and that's it.

I want to be able to play games like Shadows of Mordor and Dragon Age: Inq on HIGH-ULTRA < says that you could play Shadow on about 40fps on medium settings

About Inq I don't know yet since it's not out yet

Don't listen to him. That is a fantastic mid range card.

That card will play DA on ultra ( with no AA though )

http://www.techspot.com/review/921-dragon-age-inquisition-benchmarks/page4.html

Also a mobo/Cpu upgrade will be a good idea since expect some bottleneck on cpu intensive games

The AA in DA:I really tanks the game anyways even with big budget cards. The post processing makes it look just as good without the drop in FPS.

When someone says "high settings" I assume high everything, if he said "high with no AA" that's different.

yet you said 270x is really weak which is not the case. Its a decent mid-range gpu. And in fact it can play DA even with MSAA on 2x. Sure it will dip down to mid-high 20's but still playable

High 20's? consoles can do 30 FPS always.

always ? The hell they can. Those AC unity drop downs to less than 20fps is laughable at best.

Also you know what else is laughable. DA on consoles been a mix of medium and high settings on consoles and running worse compared to a pc with a mere 7870 providing same performance with consoles but with much better visuals let alone a 270x

We aren't talking about AC:U...

Performance-wise, both consoles do a good job of delivering a stable, consistent frame-rate but it is the Xbox One version that delivers the smoothest experience overall. Frame-rate drops are extremely rare, only appearing in the most extreme circumstances - for all intents and purposes we're looking at a locked 30fps

That appears to disprove your point, and what's the point of playing on PC if your have prettier visuals but your playing at 20-30 FPS? you might as well get the console version at that point.

And why exactly should you get the console version when you have a 7870 or better GPU ( in this case 270x ) ? You either get better visuals with similar frame rate with consoles ( and in this case 270x runs the game at 27-33fps) or you lower detail level get a much better frame rate compared to consoles and have the same visual level. You do know there are graphics option on games

And now your just going around in circles, lower the settings (but still above consoles) and enjoy >30FPS or don't play on PC.

I could say, oh look ultra settings at 8k looks so pretty when in reality I am playing at 5 FPS. You don't enjoy the game in that case and your either better off getting the console version or lowering your settings. To me, I cant play at less than 30 FPS, yes I'm not dropping to 29 FPS, its not fun.

We also know that Ubisoft games have run like ass lately on PC.
