Building Computer: GTX 680 or GTX 670

So I plan on getting a new gaming PC really soon, and I'm stuck between two cards:

The 680 has more CUDA cores and a higher clock speed, but do you guys think it's worth the extra $120? It won't really be much of a problem for me, but if it's not going to make much of a difference there's no point in getting it. And what should I be looking at in terms of cooling these cards? I don't need to go for liquid, I just want to make sure traditional fans are enough. Also, I'll only be gaming in 1080p, nothing higher.

The benchmark comparisons that I managed to find showed that they are very close in FPS. http://www.squidoo.com/gtx680-vs-gtx670 I don't know why that was hard to find.

Not likely. The manufacturer simply set a minor overclock on the card.

Agreed. The $120 mark up for the 680 is not worth it. If you're set on a 680 or 670, it's gotta' be 670 all the way.

Get a 670, it performs so close to a 680 at a much smaller price. The difference in price is not worth it at all. I have a 670 and an i5 and I can max every single game I have at high frames.

10 fps is a big deal if it's the difference between 50 and 60fps. It's not a big deal if it's the difference between 150 and 160fps. The performance gap can be better expressed in a percentage, instead of a raw fps number.

A decently factory overclocked GPU is usually MUCH more than 0.1 to 0.4 fps faster than a reference version.

The 680 is overpriced right now.

If you know anything about GPUs, this is a trend you will have noticed for a great many years.

Get the 670 or wait for the 680s price to drop. It's a waste of money if you are asking. If money isn't a problem go nuts and enjoy that extra 5-10% performance boost.

They say that because it's price is a good bit less than a 680, the price difference isn't worth it. So building a computer there's no point throwing money at a 680 when he can save money for an almost identical card and put it towards something else like a better CPU

Id go evga 670 FTW personally. It's a great card, that I can definitely say.

Or just ditch both and get this. More memory, faster than the 670 and usually faster than the 680. Also, overclocks like a champ.

Look into the 7970 GHz edition vs GTX 680 and you'll see what I mean.

i have a evga 680gtx since its release and i'm loving it, it overclocks nicely as well, i have the gpu +150mhz above its default and the memory at +385mhz above its default, very stable.

its hard to really tell you what to get since the 670 can probably max everything almost as well as the 680. 10-15% speed difference here and there.

also i'm running at 2560x1440... which stresses the card more then your 1080p. So maybe 670 is enough for your 1080p

2. With the money he could get a 4GB 670 that's cheaper than a 2GB 680 and will help with higher res and game settings.

3. 680 has the worst price to performance ratio out there, even a 7970 is better in that area,

i wish my mobo supported a third gpu cuz then id def get a third 670. i dont feel like gutting it out and putting a new mobo in ahhhhh #firstworldproblemsGamingVengeance

if thats what people say then he should get the 7970, since the 680 is an inferior card.
