a speaker system? idk, but id go with something from BOSE, they tend to be cheaper, and they give good surround sound.Skilled_TactixLooks like we got a new troll on this forum. Judgding by this post, and another one, I wouldn't take him seriously guys.
sorry, im a noob, belive it or not, i was serious, i havent bought a speaker system in a while.Skilled_TactixOkay. Your posts just appeared to be obvious troll bait. Bose are not very good, and have horrible performance per dollar on almost all their products. Apart from a few decent headphones, the rest of their lineup is rather mediocre, yet hyped up to the heavens. Not all of them are bad, there are Bose surrounds that sound good, but they are not cheaper as you say, they tend to cost $5000 yet get beaten by for example a $1500 Dali Concept 5.1
[QUOTE="spittis"]+1 Don't those need a receiver? In which case they're not on budget. Also the satellites don't go below 115hz which isn't exactly ideal.Well I've seen this set of 5.1 speakers recommended many times as an entry setup on AVSforums Energy Take Classic 5.1, so they should be pretty good, but I've never heard them myself. Right on budget anyways.

You're right, they do need a receiver which the OP probably doesn't have, don't know why I didn't think of that. NVIDIATI had a sensible suggestion so look at that instead OP.
Regarding the frequency response though, I really think it's a rather bad way to look at speakers, I mean most likely the room you're listening in will make a bigger impact on the sound rather than having satellite speakers that respond to say 80 Hz compared to 115 Hz.

^zomg. On sale $250. Usually close to 400. Has a decent receiver to build upon just chuck the fronts for better ones in the future.
Despite some of the 5.1 options discussed above, the best option would be to spend the money on a 2.1 system and add more speakers at a later time.
Take for example those Jamo's in my previous post, for the price they're not bad (keep in mind they are $130 speakers, nothing more), but you can do considerably better by going the 2.1 route.
If 2.1 is an option, I'll be happy to help you further.
And we have a winner!Onkyo TX-SR313 5.1 receiver - $154.99
Jamo S 426 HCS 5 piece speaker set - $128.86
Dayton SUB-1200 12inch subwoofer - $119.00

hmm, that actually sounds smarter, what are some reccomended 2.1 systems?THEBVSEDWell get a nice receiver so you can add more speakers later when you have the money. Then pick a nice pair of speakers and a sub.
I think that must be his best option for a 5.1 for $400. Especially if buying new that is.Onkyo TX-SR313 5.1 receiver - $154.99

ok guys. im going to best buy or future shop tmrw for a 2.1 system, i increased my budget to 700 however I live in Canada so the prices are a bit higher than the states. any suggestions? i would rather not buy online cause of shipping prices.THEBVSEDIf you refuse to buy online I suggest you find a local hi-fi store in Canada. I don't know any as I don't live there, but Nvidiati lives in Toronto and apparently there are hi-fi stores everywhere. Do you live in Toronto or another big city?
anyone? what should i get from hi-fi for 2.1 under 700 dollars?THEBVSEDYou can go to this hi-fi store and listen to see what you like the best. They will only have quality products in there. Doesn't necessarily mean everything is good, but you won't get fooled at least. "if you can't hear the difference, don't pay for it". Check and see what they sell. Jamo? Boston Acoustics? NAD? Cambridge? Dali? Polk? PSB?

I would avoid Futureshop or Best Buy, most of the brands they sell in Canada are crummy or overpriced.
For a pair of fronts, you should look into the Wharefdale Diamond 10.2 speakers (MSRP $479 CAD). I'm not sure your location in Canada, but going under the assumption you're in or around Toronto (like a large chunk of the population), Audio Oasis on Queen Street E. will deal Wharefdale speakers. Keep in mind the MSRP can be negotiated down, especially if you consider buying a receiver from them too. As for a sub, well with the 10.2s you won't really need one right now.
