And I think Command and Conquer 3 would be fun for a one time play through and same with Red Alert 3... even though those are a bit older then 3 years ago.
I'd say DoW 2: Retribution since it gives you access 6 factions for multiplayer which is pretty crazy. I also really like CoH 2 but not everyone agrees with me on that one.
Starcraft 2 is good if you are looking for a more classic style of RTS where the focus is on building a base and an army that has the right composition of units rather than focusing on tactics.
I've heard such amazing things about Startcraft 2. On practically every website it is heralded as an awesome strategy game. Will definitely give that a spin!
Starcraft 2 Wings of Liberty no longer counts. It was released a few months longer than 3 years ago. I guess you can count Heart of the Swarm, if expansion packs count.
XCOM and Civ5 don't count because they are not RTS games.
@pitbull0123: Company of Heroes because it actually tried to innovate, rather than reproducing the same tired base building formulas. Technically, X-Com shouldn't really count because the meat of that game is turned based action.
@blaznwiipspman1 That needs to happen. They seem to be churning out WoW expansions like nobodys business but an up to date warcraft strategy game would be the BOMB. Rumor has it that a film is in the works too? ;)
The best are probably EUIV, wargame airland battle, and, uh, rome 2?

I would go for EU III to be honest, more depth in my opinion.
But yeah ... not that many RTS on the scene lately since the whole world knows only one thing "starcraft this, starcraft that" which makes it harder for devs to come up with games that do better.

I blame esports. Gone are the days of long and interesting RTS battles with massive base building, ballistics physics and huge maps. Now it's all fast paced clickfests filled with esports lingo and trash talking.
The number of games suggested that either pass the 3 year threshold, or simply aren't RTS games is making me laugh. Can you guys simply not hold back shouting out your favorite games? Help out the poster by giving some honest suggestions.
I consider this all lots of help actually! It wasn't STRICT. I'm just looking for RTS style games to fill my saturdays with it doesn't matter if it isn't 100% RTS any games of that rough type are perfect. Got a shit load of ideas now and my wallet will take a beating (fucking steam :P).
