Just switched to PC gaming and I'm rekindling my love for the RTS genre. Unsure where to start. Suggestions?

Defiantly get Starcraft 2

Starcraft 2 is the best RTS game ever!

Here is a few that I think are great!

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm

XCOM: Enemy Unknown

XCOM: Enemy Within

Warhammer 40:000: Dawn of War II

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II - Chaos Rising

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II - Retribution

Oldies but goodies ones!

Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos

Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne

StarCraft

StarCraft: Brood War

Age of Mythology

Rise of Nations

Age of Empires III

Hands down Starcraft 2 followed by X-Com Enemy Unknown.

Starcraft 2 like people said.

And I think Command and Conquer 3 would be fun for a one time play through and same with Red Alert 3... even though those are a bit older then 3 years ago.

Xcom isn't really a RTS. Its turn-based strategy.

I'd say DoW 2: Retribution since it gives you access 6 factions for multiplayer which is pretty crazy. I also really like CoH 2 but not everyone agrees with me on that one.

Starcraft 2 is good if you are looking for a more classic style of RTS where the focus is on building a base and an army that has the right composition of units rather than focusing on tactics.

I've heard such amazing things about Startcraft 2. On practically every website it is heralded as an awesome strategy game. Will definitely give that a spin!

AOE 2 HD

Find it amusing some folks find X-COM to be a RTS when it's a TBS.

Anyway, I had a lot of fun with StarCraft 2, AI War: Fleet Command, and my recent favorite: Wargame: AirLand Battle

The Total War series ....in addition to Starcraft and Dawn of War games mentioned here, CIV5 too.

Starcraft 2 Wings of Liberty no longer counts. It was released a few months longer than 3 years ago. I guess you can count Heart of the Swarm, if expansion packs count.

XCOM and Civ5 don't count because they are not RTS games.

Starcraft II.

Civ5 5 and Total War games are all Turn Based RTS.

Supreme Commander. The first one..

The lack of Sins of a Solar Empire in this thread is criminal. Fantastic RTS.

Starcraft 2 and Company of Heroes.

Star Craft 2 Heart of the Swarm

@pitbull0123: Company of Heroes because it actually tried to innovate, rather than reproducing the same tired base building formulas. Technically, X-Com shouldn't really count because the meat of that game is turned based action.

blizzard needs to make a new warcraft game

#21 Posted by pitbull0123 (13 posts) -

@blaznwiipspman1 That needs to happen. They seem to be churning out WoW expansions like nobodys business but an up to date warcraft strategy game would be the BOMB. Rumor has it that a film is in the works too? ;)

Starcraft II.

Civ5 5 and Total War games are all Turn Based RTS.

If its turn based then it is NOT real time and vice versa, Turn Based RTS is a contradictory phrase.

The best are probably EUIV, wargame airland battle, and, uh, rome 2?

Not really a lot of RTS lately.

I would go for EU III to be honest, more depth in my opinion.

But yeah ... not that many RTS on the scene lately since the whole world knows only one thing "starcraft this, starcraft that" which makes it harder for devs to come up with games that do better.

I blame esports. Gone are the days of long and interesting RTS battles with massive base building, ballistics physics and huge maps. Now it's all fast paced clickfests filled with esports lingo and trash talking.

i would easily take that off your hands for you lol.

But really I think littleKill has a point, the esports thing has really effected the RTS genre specifically.

The number of games suggested that either pass the 3 year threshold, or simply aren't RTS games is making me laugh. Can you guys simply not hold back shouting out your favorite games? Help out the poster by giving some honest suggestions.

I consider this all lots of help actually! It wasn't STRICT. I'm just looking for RTS style games to fill my saturdays with it doesn't matter if it isn't 100% RTS any games of that rough type are perfect. Got a shit load of ideas now and my wallet will take a beating (fucking steam :P).

Starcraft 2 is being download NOW!
