Using Avast and it's getting on my nerves. I keep having to manually add programs as exceptions for them to work, like even Battlefield 4. Anything better for free?

I use Microsoft Security Essentials, its free. On top of that I used Malware Bytes, it lets you use it for free also and sometimes finds stuff MSE doesnt. I have MSE on real time scan, I do manual scans every month or so with Malware Bytes.
I've tried other virus scan programs and they all give false positives on gamecd fixes and other files so I just don't use them anymore.

Something wrong there.
I've been using Avast for years and never had to manually add anything.
Do you have the free version or the paid version with the firewall? Is it the latest version?
Avast is still the best free alternative on the market. Especially now with the new features.
I'm not using one? the era of viruses flooding the net is almost gone.
Unless you're going into certain type of sites
That's still dangerous.
You would be amazed how many are in your system right now if you did a scan.

Maybe, and maybe that's the whole point of AV these days - to make sure you're going to pay for another copy next year.
Seriously unless my PC strats to shutdown or behaving weird I don't care.

- I haven't paid for an AV for 10 years.
- And viruses/spyware don't make your PC shutdown or do weird stuff, that's the old kind of malware. These days they just sit dormant trying to key-log you or grab your account details.
Install one and do a scan for example, then if it finds something read what that virus does.

I don't mind, it's not like I've got my bank accounts managed throught the Internet - some people do, and that's fine but then they need to manage with security problems like those you've mentioned.
Windows 8 has Windows Defender and earlier WIndows have Windows Security Essentials, they both work fine (same thing I think) and I never had a virus. The best thing they are FREE
I like MSE since it actually asks about false positives. Avast/AVG make you do some nonsense folder exclusion stuff.Too bad MSE places last place by far on av-comparitives... but eh, I get anoyyed at how many false positives other av's detect.
Most av's don't even detect adware like babylon hijacking browser stuff, even with PUP detection enabled in avast.
Bitdefender.
I switched from Avast cos the new version of Avast is super anal and gives so many false positives. Flagged my razer mouse software as a virus and isolated it :S

He probably has it set on full paranoid mode.
