I am looking at getting a Asus ROG Laptop, i7 with 16gb ram and a 860m. Has anyone here personally used the 860m or a similar spec'd laptop? Curious how the performance is.

Like using GTX760 but 10-20% worse

So I'd just say R9 270X or GTX750Ti

Its essentially a gtx 750ti.

Anyways, the laptop was sub 1000 dollars during black friday. It is not worth a price tag of 1200+ especially when the gtx 960m and 965m models are out.

The R9 270x is considerably faster (as is the 760) compared to a 750TI

Yeah.

I am pretty sure the gtx 860m is actually a 750ti in mobile form.

A bit slower 750Ti version to be more precise: http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GTX-860M-vs-GeForce-GTX-750-Ti

Depends on what you want. I got an i7 / 8 GB RAM / 860M and it's all right. Don't have too demanding games though. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is probably my newest game with pretty graphics. Play it on medium/high with 40-50 FPS. Older games like Witcher 2 and Crysis run on max settings about the same. Haven't tried anything like AC Unity.

I honestly think the problem with these laptops is the fact they are trying to push the 1080p displays.. If this were 1366 x 768 or 1680 x 1050 displays you wouldn't have as big of hit on these performances.. And for the games that it is easy on, you can crank up the AA to counter act the lower resolution.. But when it comes to a LCD, your basically slaved to your native resolution to a platform you cannot upgrade the graphics card on.. It is fucking baffling people are buying into the shit of "gaming" laptops with 1440p or 4k displays.. GL trying to get tolerable FPS rate at those resolutions in a years time (hell gl now on most set ups) for any remotely demanding game.. Honestly if I were shopping for a laptop with a 860m I would not get one with a 1080p or high display..

@sSubZerOo: i agree.

i got a gaming laptop with a 780M but i had to have a 1080P panel with it. i would have preferred a good quality 1680X1050 monitor built in. for gaming laptops especially it just doesnt make sense to be paring these GPUs with high resolution screens. 1680X1050 is a fine resolution for gaming on a 15" or 17" screen.

Exactly! Ty I am baffled by people wanting 1080p or greater on laptops for gaming.. Laptops are not upgradable.. And resolutions is one of the biggest hits when it comes to performance.. I would much prefer a lower resolution like 1680 x 1050, or 1366 x 768 (I like that alot on my 14" laptop screen) and when my laptop can handle it I can crank up the AA.. And unlike AA, you really can't turn the resolution down on these lcd's.. If you do, it causes pixel stretching and makes the image look unbearable..
