Any paper manual is probably sorely outdated. I dabble with it now and then because I have a station pass (mainly for Vanguard and EQ2), but sometimes I feel like kicking it old school with EQ1. Digital Download should be perfectly fine.
Don't waste your time worrying about a paper manual for any MMORPG, the games change too fast for a manual to be relevant. Most will have an online manual, or even an in-game manual that will usually be a lot more up to date.
I don't play EQ any longer, I've even cancelled my Station Pa ss due to the recent price hike (mutter grumble raising prices just to add Vanguard mutter grumble) but I will recommend it. It kept my attention for about 6 years or so, very few games have managed that. Even with EQ2, I found myself occasionally starting up EQ and playing some of my older characters. So, no harm in giving it a whirl, especially since you can buy it as a digital download if you want
