Advice on replacing a graphics card

My wife's graphics card is going out and I need to get her a new one. Right now her specs are: Corsair 750 watt PSU, 4Gb of memory, AMD Phenom 9950 quadcore processor, and a Geforce 9600GT graphics card. I am looking at either a GTX 550 TI or a 560 TI. I know techically the 560 is an upgrade, but I've heard it's not enough of one to warrant the price over the 550. I want to stay as close as I can to the $150 mark as possible. I don't really know a whole lot about graphics cards, so any help would be greatly appreciated

GTX 560 is 2x stronger then 550ti. I would look into a gtx 650ti its much faster then a gtx 550ti but not as fast as a gtx 560.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the first number in a graphics card is the generation it's made. A 550 would be a 5th gen and a 650 would be a 6th gen. If I'm right, why isn't the 650 faster than the 560?

you look at the 2nd number to deterine gaming performance 5 or lower are not strong for gaming 6 or greater means more performance. Usually you have to go two generations ahead for the x5x...series to perform better then the x6x.. series from two generations earlier.

you look at the 2nd number to deterine gaming performance 5 or lower are not strong for gaming 6 or greater means more performance usually you have to go two generations ahead for the x5x...series to perform better then the x6x.. series from twi generations older.

If I understand correctly then I think I'd rather go with the 560, unless you have any other suitable options. My wife is a bit of gamer, so I want her to have a card good for what she does play. She likes WoW, Torchlight 2 and a few other things. She doesn't need anything on the bleed edge of technology obviously, but I do want her to have the option of playing what she does on high settings. If that is possible staying close to the $150-$175 mark as possible.

You can look at the model numbers alright, but you are better off with benchies. anandtech, techpowerup.

How do I get that information and how to a compare it another card? Keep in mind I'm pretty ignorant on this stuff. Every comp my wife or I have ever had was built by people we knew. I want to learn and understand all of this myself.

Apart from the fact on newegg i cant find one cheaper than $190...............and then most the 448 cores are even more expensive than that

Its good enough , it has a good cooler which will allow higher overclocking too. Going from a 9600gt to this card will be a night and day difference. You will see 4-5x the performance.

Well apart from the fact you have a couple of 7850s at the same price and a few 650 tis floating around i dont see why you would buy old tech. If you take a look at this you are seeing margins of upto 20% wins by the 7850, which is newer, more power efficient, quieter and overal far better value for money imo http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gtx-650-ti-benchmark-gk106,3318.html

i wouldnt get a 560 since its last gen. Go with the 7850 since it is faster than the 560 ti, it is usually cheaper since they stopped production of the 560ti. Also your cpu needs an upgrade as well so I wouldn't get any video card stronger than the 7850 before upgrading the cpu.
