a10-5750m/r9 m290x, i7 4700mq/gtx 770, or 4700mq/gt 755 sli?

Buying my son a nice laptop for his 16th birthday and narrowed the search down to 3 particular laptops. Besides the above mentioned differences all systems have 16GB ram, 1tb hdd, 17" 1080p screens. All are in the $950-1250 range. The amd one has 256gb ssd in addition to the 1tb 7200rpm storage hdd, ddr3 1866 instead of ddr3 1600 and a bluray burner. I like the added features of the amd one but am concerned about non gaming performance. Anyhow, what would be the most balanced of the three in regards to gaming and creative apps? He intends to game a lot and do video/image editing and illustration and web design work as well but gaming will be the primary use and he likes current titles. The sli rig is the cheapest btw. Another option was an older refurbished 15" mbp. I appreciate any input but welcome first hand experience accounts of any of the cpu/gpu combos listed.

Also, why would you be concerned "non-gaming performance?" What does that have to do with anything?

i7 4700mq/gtx 770 is by far the best option. It combines great CPU with great GPU.

a10-5750m/r9 m290x has a very good GPU but trash CPU. While the two other have a core i7 this one has an APU which is awful. To understand the difference between this APU and the i7 4700MQ, their cinebench R11,5 score is: a10-5750m/r9: 2,3 and i7 4700mq: 6,7. This makes the i7 almost 3 times faster than the A10 APU which it would be more than obvious in games and video editing (Cinebench is a video rendering benchmark). APU will also hold back the great M290X and it will possibly never show its true performance. The M290X is like 30% faster than GTX770M.

4700mq/gt 755 sli has a good CPU but GT755 in SLI? no ty. Now in games that support SLI, the GT 755M SLI will be at the same speed with GTX770. But SLI has a lot of problems. This might be the 2nd option if the 1st is too high. Since the most of the new games will support SLI and the really old ones you can still play them with some of the options lowered.

And about the SSD that a10-5750m/r9 m290x has. Don't worry. You can place an SSD any time. While the GPU cannot be replaced and the CPU has limits in replacement (Different socket).

I'd go with the m290X one, far better GPU and you've got 250Gb SSD.

Yes thr i7 is far better than the A10 but when it comes to gaming GPU is what makes all the difference.

Ty for responses. After mulling things over i narrowed it down to my final two. I opted like you suggested to strongly consider the gtx 770m/i7 as well as a slightly more ($130 more to be precise) expensive new option, a 4810mq/r9-m290x cyberpowerpc fangbook evo but its the 2gb version of the r290x. The 770m one is a toshiba qosmio. Am almost leaning toward the fangbook and am now looking for coupon codes to see if i can snipe a quick 5-10% discount hopefully. Was in the midst of comparing specs at gpuboss and notebookcheck and you are entirely correct regarding the a10. This shopping around is a maddening process, when i think i'm almost done new options keep presenting themselves like spending $215 more for a 780m 4gb/4810mq. This is how stings stand now: $1100 for the 4700mq/770m Qosmio or $1230 for m290x/4810mq Fangbook. The $1445 for the gtx 780m rig is beyond what i initially planned to spend and if i were to spend that much why not just go for an 880m for another 400 or so (by this point things spiraled out of control so i cut myself off at $1250). I feel that the fangbook might be the best option though i must admit i've never heard of cyberpowerpc before.

Anyway go with 4700mq/770m or with 4810mq/r9-m290x, both are really great. I would prefer the 2nd (4810mq/r9-m290x) since it will have overall 30% more performance for 12% extra price.

And about CyberPowerPC. I know them while I live 10,000 miles away :P.

I would prefer also the company that has the best warranty (how many years and how much time till they repair/replace the the malfunctioned part).
