2GB's is enough for nearly every game currently out!
4GB's is the maximum you need by far.
Most games run in 32 bit mode, which means they can only access around 3 gigs of ram so 4 is about as much as possibly needed.(at the moment in gaming).
4 GB is both the required maximum and minimum. Just buy two 2GB sticks. As more and more games with large levels where texture loading take up lots of resources it becomes very useful. Even older games like BF2 (particularly PR mod with it's huge maps) really benefit from the extra RAM. Keeping games from using your swap file will save you loads of performance issues.
You also don't want to have to worry about such things as multitasking slowing you down. You should be able to be running a RAM intensive FPS, 3 browser windows, countless little things, Steam, Ventrilo, and a VPN to your work desktop in the office all at the same time.
