2GB's is enough for nearly every game currently out!

4GB's is the maximum you need by far.

2gb is more than enough for a highend gaming rig, 4gb is overkill

Most games run in 32 bit mode, which means they can only access around 3 gigs of ram so 4 is about as much as possibly needed.(at the moment in gaming).

2GB is plenty, although I will say having 4GB does help.

the only game ive play where 4GB ram works is crysis, it helps with some stuttering, other than that it only helps with the speed games loads up and exit. For example, it used to take a while for battlefield 2142 to shut down, now it takes seconds! i dont regret having 4GB and its future proof unless you have DD2 and by the time games use all 4GB DDR3 is the standard!

4 GB is both the required maximum and minimum. Just buy two 2GB sticks. As more and more games with large levels where texture loading take up lots of resources it becomes very useful. Even older games like BF2 (particularly PR mod with it's huge maps) really benefit from the extra RAM. Keeping games from using your swap file will save you loads of performance issues.

You also don't want to have to worry about such things as multitasking slowing you down. You should be able to be running a RAM intensive FPS, 3 browser windows, countless little things, Steam, Ventrilo, and a VPN to your work desktop in the office all at the same time.
