I have tried both and IMO I prefer 16:10. The extra height is better for me than wideness and games look bigger because of it. Games look a bit cramped in 16:9 from what I've seen, plus:

As you can see in the 3rd pic the left monitor looks taller with 1200p and the right monitor looks cramped and heck part of the flower is cropped with 1080p when it comes to missing parts of the wallpaper.

So I prefer 16:10, what about you?

What's not to like about 16:10, you get more screen space.

I like 16:10, wish more monitors had that aspect ratio - especially on laptops. I miss my 1920x1200 laptop display.

16:9 any day. I just like how it sounds.

#9 Posted by Bikouchu35 (7363 posts) -

Depends on what you do with it.

Pictures, Movies, videos, sports, blah are obviously better with 16:9 since is usually recorded and native to that aspect.

16:10 is muuuuuuch better for websites and reading. I think fps maybe better too for me.

Two 16:9 vertical... imaginez reading a book, manga, comic, forums, etc :o

16:10 if only there was a 2560 x 1600 monitor that overclocked to 120hz. :(

I recently went from 16:10 1200p to 16:9 1440p. Although 16:10 is boss, higher res trumps it.

Why do I not find it surprising you would make a preference decision based on something meaningless?

Oh right, alienware.

Depends on the native aspect ratio that the game was made for.

You don't get "extra space" just because something is in 16:10, it's an aspect ratio not a rez.

Hmmm. I've always thought a game in 4:3 1600x1200 looked better than it would be at 1080p. That's going strictly by image quality though.

Edit:

I've also noticed 4:3 monitors are quite expensive compared to widescreen ones. I wonder why if non-widescreen was considered inferior?

darksusperia

No

IF a piece of media is native to a certain ratio it can look weird at a another ratio.

Something made in 16:10 can look cropped vertically at 16:9

Something made in 16:9 can look cropped horizontally at 16:10

The ratio doesn't increase or decrease the viewing area of the monitor.

16:10 is not "bigger" than 16:9 it's just a slightly different shape.

Most of yous are f*cking stupid.

#29 Posted by kraken2109 (13010 posts) -

16:9 is what most things these days are designed for so I'm happy with it.

#30 Posted by Idontremember (926 posts) -

I like the one with the most pixels.

1080p fits perfectly in 1920*1200. For a video, The black-bars are minimal, so in this case, I'll go for 16:10.

With that said, those new 2560*1080 screen will surely earn my preference vs 1920*1200. Gaming in ultrawide screen is quite awesome.
Against 1440/1600p monitors, that might be a different story.

But games are rendered in real time. They change how much is being shown, based on aspect ratio. At least, if they support the ratio they do. That's why with any modern game, going to a widescreen ratio actually does show more of the environment, compared to an old school 4:3 or 5:4 standard. With old games that didn't support widescreen, forcing them to go widescreen just stretches the image. But not anymore. And 16:10 is pretty widely supported. Based on my own experience, most games do in fact increase vertical viewing area going from 16:9 to 16:10. The only reason they wouldn't is if the game was specifically made to not support 16:10.

I watch movies on my computer so I prefer 16:9 - less unused screen space. For strategy games 16:10 is a little better, but then I don't play strategy games all that much.

It depends on how the video game's fov is calculated.

When I played Crysis 3, since my 580 wasn't enough for 1920*1200 maxed out, I made a custom res of 1920*900.

BEST DECISION EVER.
I boosted my FPS over 40 instantly and the superwide screen also fixed the crappy FOV making the ratio perfect.

If you have two monitors, same "size" lets say 21" monitors. One is 16:9 and one is 16:10, you get more screen space. I just went from a 22" 16:10 to a 24" 16:9 and the screen space is very similar.
