The 1440p video would be best for traditional media like movies and shows. But if you play a lot of intense action games like Battlefield 4, the higher refresh rate would be better. Everything will look much smoother and you will definitely have an edge over 60HZ players like myself. 1080p still looks amazing as well.

I would prefer 1440p mainly because multitasking would be better and of course higher res games. I would love to play modded Skyrim at 1440p. I hear 120 fps is a big difference in shooters, but I am fine with 60 fps (if I saw 120+ fps I might want one). Either way my HD 7950 is not enough for 120 fps or 1440p

@zatorys: The 120hz monitors use TN panels. TN is a garbage technology. Go with 1440p, which will use an IPS or PLS panel.

i would go with the 144hz for high fps anyday over ips.

ips / high rez looks real nice but you better have a beast of a video card with alot of vram if you go in that direction or you're going to be watching a slideshow.

interesting question, one I had been asking myself for the last year+.

do I go 120Hz, do I go 1440p, do I go triple screens....

120Hz, 1440p would both require additional gpu power.

triple screens while requiring more power aswell, take up too much desktop space.

In the end, I went and bought a 21:9 LG 29EA73-P. I regret nothing.

If you play alot of FPS game then go for the 120+Hz Monitor, if not then go with the IPS. Personally I play less FPS now so I'll go for the IPS monitor and probably not less than 27'.

There is also a newer high Hz Monitor. EIZO 240Hz Monitor but its only with 23,5'. Wish you can get it with over 1080p and 27'+. The price is high too but this monitor is only for people who really like to play FPS game.

120Hz monitor easily, I don't think you'll get as much enjoyment out of an image in 1440p but if that's all you want then sure, get the 1440p monitor.

The dell ips S2740L that's 2560x1440 has 3.2ms of input lag, which is less than most 120hz displays if you really want one. 60hz display

http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_s2740l.htm

They also have the U2312HM with .6ms of input lag which is less than 144hz monitors, but because of the image drawing, it comes out slightly more. 16.667ms input lag due to being 60hz, and 6.944ms for 144hz

It's a 23in ips display, but 1920x1080, 60hz

If you play fps you want to get a 144hz display. vg248qe is about the same price as the 120hz panels and is just better. First gen 120hz panels often have quite a bit of input, I have an older vg236he 120hz display and it has 12ms of input lag + the 8.2ms of 120hz. I upgraded to the vg248qe 144hz display and it's a noticeable difference. You can definitely feel it, if you have a lot of fps experience.

Fatal1ty owns a vg248qe too. Don't enable lightboost, it adds more input lag and reduces the brightness by half. We both agreed it blows.

The catleaps(2560x1440) even if you oc them to 120hz or w/e, have a lot of input lag, something like 12-25ms.

The dells might overclock a bit too, but I don't have one.

I just got an ASUS 144hz monitor... night and day when playing FPS compared to the 60hz. I am so glad I dont have to use V-sync anymore. What a gimp that was.

Its one of those things that you may not think 120hz is worth it... till you actually have it.

I made the mistake early of spending all my cash on hardware and skimping out on the monitor..... but you realize that that is the worst place to skimp, it is after all what you will be looking at the whole time.

lots of trade offs between 1440p and 120Hz, so it is up to the individual, what you need etc.

1440p pros

  • IPS panels have the incredible color quality., large viewing angles etc
  • sharp image quality with the combination of superior colors makes games to look gorgeous
  • improvement in working/productivity dude to the large desktop
  • easier to achieve, you only need a GPU that is around 1.7 times faster to get the same fps like you do in 1080p (depending on the game)

1440p cons

  • only 60fps
  • cost a bit more

120Hz pros

  • games look and play much more smooth compare to 60Hz.
  • you don't need to use V-sync.
  • you have an edge in MP for fast paced fps.
  • 3D support

120Hz cons

  • dull colors compare 60Hz TN panels, and night and day difference compare to IPS panels in color quality.
  • It is harder to achieve, you need a CPU and GPU that are 2 times more powerful in order to get double fps(from 60 to 120).

1440p. The extra screen space is awesome for multitasking as well as making your games looks super crisp. 120Hz really only gives you a benefit for competitive gaming

120Hz all the way if you're into gaming or even 3D gaming (vision, 3D glasses etc).

1440p if you're into movies but don't expect gaming at this point unless you combo top GPU card in SLI/Cross

I'd hold off and check out the new G-Sync monitors. Apparently they're really good.

You need a much stronger pc to play games at 120fps@1920x1080p compared to 60fps@2560x1440, and NO you don't buy a 1440p monitor for movies in fact thee is not a single movie in 1440p and only 36 movies that are in 4k(according to imdb)

There are several other manufactures that make these displays if you dont like the catleap. One of which will be my next display.

It's a tricky choice for sure. In an ideal world I'd like one of each!
