well here you will find good commerical games which
are released as freeware now.
some of them are ad supported.
(i havent tested all the ad supported versions but
for what i have heard the ads are NOT ANNOYING.
cause they appear in pause menus.

ad supported games:
psi ops
the suffering
full spectrum warrior
area 51
rise and fall

Thanks for posting.

Full Spectrum Warrior is pretty cool, but it's so annoying that there isn't a save function (there's a replay, but you can't save, ever). You have to restart from the VERY beginning every time.

for those of you that like RTS games there was "Enemy Nations" that was released as freeware. For RPGs Dink Smallwood was released as freeware and the second elder scrolls game. Don't remeber what that one was called though.

They should make a sticky with all the stuff people have been finding online lately.

Good find...

I always wanted to play The Suffering

Oh Gametap has the original Fallout for free...and several other games as well.

1) That Ubi promotion ended quite a long time ago :(

2) Thank you for this list and the link to the wiki page! Very useful. I believe I am going to download FSW and try that one out

O that sucks. I saw there was still a link to Far Cry on File Planet so I assumed it was still good. Thats what I get for assuming.

Thanks for telling me this. I remember playing some old GTA games and they were awesome... Don't fully know what happened to them. And i always wanted to try Psi-Ops.

Oh and Savage has a pretty strong community still (there is a sequal out now, but still a good community in the 1st game). It is a good mix between different genres like FPS and RTS (if you a commander). It has been free for awhile now and i would suggest it for anyone who wants to pass the time for awhile (its lasting appeal didn't last too long for me... but it is was fun).

for what i have heard and read is that they no longer function, means that you may be able to download them somewhere (for example on fileplanet from the link cherub_rock has posted...but you cannot activate them anymore to play...furthermore the fileplanet link is no longer featured on their "free games" site.

scroll down here in this wiki article.

I downloaded The Suffering a while ago and I didn't find out it was ad supported until about halfway through the game. Honestly, the ads didn't show up until I had played through a large portion and then they started coming up every 5 minutes. :(

every 5 minutes...damn...can you say more specific when they appear and what do they look like?
pop they up during the game and cover a good portion of the screen?
would be very good to know.

hm maybe they dont run because the program code forces the game to connect to the internet for the ads.
and when a firewall in the background stops this process the game will not start.
that is only a guess...

maybe try this:
(this option is available in xp but i dont know if it is also available in vista)

right-click on the gta icon on your desktop and choose
properties->compatibilty->run this program in compatability mode for-> windows 2000 (or 95/98/xp)

3 is better than none :) thats just 3 more free games for me, legally yay.

I recommend everyone stay away from the downloads for The Suffering, Rise and Fall, and Psi Ops, as all three games use StarForce. Be wary of Area 51 as well. It also used StarForce but had it removed in a patch. Make sure the downloaded version of the game is up-to-date if you download it, or update it to the latest version yourself if it isn't.

If any of you guys have downloaded and installed any of the games I mentioned, here's how you detect and remove StarForce.

Using this method I couldn't find starforce on the download for Rise and Fall. Tried both methods in the link provided too.

Also, what's so bad about StarForce? I checked and yeah it is in my system. I have all the four games you mentioned (Rise and Fall, The Suffering, Psi Ops, and Area 51).

I just removed Starforce and I'm still able to play Rise and Fall. Already deleted the other three (because I don't even play them) so I can't test those.

I'm pretty sure starforce wasn't in Rise and Fall. As I said in my previous post, Rise and Fall was the only game I downloaded from the list and I couldn't find Starforce anywhere and I tried both methods of detecting it that were posted.

I'm playing PsiOps which I got from fileplanet, and just checked for the Starfoce files. I can't find them in either my system32/drivers folder, or the device manager, so perhaps they've been removed from these games? I haven't noticed a single add yet either, but perhaps it's due to me disconnecting from the internet shortly after I launch the program ;)

Thanks a lot for posting these AuthenticKaizen!

I'm pretty sure starforce wasn't in Rise and Fall. As I said in my previous post, Rise and Fall was the only game I downloaded from the list and I couldn't find Starforce anywhere and I tried both methods of detecting it that were posted.

No, Rise and Fall has it alright, even in the most up-to-date version, but it must have been removed for this downloadable version.

Seems like it, which is good.

Anyway, I just posted what I did to make sure people were aware that those were StarForce games so they didn't end up having it installed without knowing it if the downloads did have it.

Thanks for posting the info, it's important that people know any possible down-sides to playing these games.
