What is the best graphics card under or around $400??

Hey guys I am due for my graphics card update, and im sure you all read hundreds of posts like this but since there are always new cards coming out on the market and price changes i figured i would make this thread. Right now i am looking at the gtx 970 msi gaming edition. It seems to be a great card for the money and i have always used msi products in my builds. I have also read good things about gigabyte and Asus though so im not sure who really makes the best 970 atm. Do you guys think there are better cards to buy around the $400 range? Perhaps an AMD 290x?

Also i should say that my current build is:

Thor V2 case

msi gd65 motherboard

850w powersupply

i7 3770k liquid cooled

amd hd 7970 oc graphics

Do you guys think it is worth waiting for a new GTX line? they released the current 9xx line in September of last year.

970 for sure.

Since you have a 7970, if you play at 1080p or lower res you could wait until next year when Nvidia releases their Pascal. With DX12 around the corner that 7970 will see some major gains. But if your itching for an upgrade GTX 970 is a great gpu for under $400
