@thehig1: 2 sli performance of the 970 is really impressive compared to the others for the price, so I figured a third one will really put me in the safe zone fore sure

3 970's is an odd choice.

The scaling on 3 gpu's isn't really worth it. You'd be better off with 1 980 ti then another as soon as you can afford it.

Ehm I think its an identical thread... So I will post what I posted before...

1st. Stay away from 3-SLI. Go for (a little more expensive) SLI GTX980ti. It will be far more powerful.

2nd. If you need to save money in order to go for GTX980ti SLI, you can get $250+ by switching motherboard/cooler/CPU/case or even getting 8GB RAM.

3rd. You need also an HDD (1TB for $50 should be enough) unless you got one from older PC...

X99 mobo is socket 2011 and the I7 4790k is socket 1150. So they are incompatible. DDR3 does not work with X99... Only DDR4.

You would need a Z97 motherboard if your going to keep the processor or a i7 5820 if your going to keep the motherboard (you would also want DDR4 RAM quad channel kit).

Plus if you go with Z97 you need 8x per PCIe slot for compatibility with Nvidia cards. So more then 2 cards are out of the question.

Exactly what I was thinking, a 980ti is certainly the way to go.

He could spend less on other parts of the build to make up for it(only get 8gb of ram or downgrade motherboard a bit)

@iknowwhatswrong: Newegg isn't always the cheapest route to go. Go to www.pcpartpicker.com add all your parts on there to make sure everything is compatible. You don't want to have to send several parts back if they aren't compatible. Plus, that site will give you the parts you want from different retailers at a lower cost. Might save you a couple hundred or more. If for some reason you want to get everything from Newegg than you can change your retailer to just newegg for all your parts and it will still tell you if all your parts are compatible.

I didn't even look at mobo when I saw the price.

The price was to my eyes far worse than any compability. xD

ps: Grats for becoming a gamespot mod! :)

Thank you, I was shocked as well by the price, was looking for some i7 5930K to justify the price.

Drop the 3x GTX 970 cards. Just pick up a single GTX 980Ti - one of these runs anywhere from almost on par to about 30% behind when compared to GTX 970 in SLI (depending on the game).

If you apply a decent OC to the GTX 980 Ti, it'll close that gap even more and plus you surpass a stock Titan X in performance as well.

Also, I'm not sure if a 750W PSU is going to be enough to run 3 GTX 970s. You could be looking at upwards of 200W draw per card and on top of everything else you have, you'd coming awful close to drawing the max on that PSU. If you're really set on 3x GTX 970 for Tri-SLI, then go for nothing less than a quality 850W PSU to ensure you have some headroom if you want to OC at all.

With my i5-4670k at stock and my 2x GTX 570s, I draw around 520W while gaming. I should expect a similar power draw if I swapped the 570s for 970s. If I stuck a third in my system I'd be flirting with 700W while gaming.

16Gb of RAM is waste of money including the i7 unless you plan to edit stuff.

8Gb of RAM and i5 4690 is great for gaming.

You can change the full tower into mid tower now that you've got only 1 GPU and even if you plan on 2 GPUs it'll be fine.

I would suggest you get dual channel kit that is 2 x 8GB sticks. Rather then 4 x 4 GB.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231628

$102 and if you buy today it's $95.

You don't need the cleaning solution. Any rubbing alcohol works just as good.

I would also recommend you get at least 850 watt psu.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA24G28N0652

P.S.

Also you forgot to include your cooler.

Finally, you don't need that tool kit. A medium size phillips tipped screwdriver will work.

If your going to go for MSI gtx 980ti id get the gaming version. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127889

Has better cooling as well as better out of the box OC. Plus it has the same color scheme as the mother board if your into that as well.

I have them in 2xSLI and they are defiantly worth the extra cash worth the little extra cash

One last thing - what do you need the Arctic Silver Arcticlean Thermal material Remover & Surface Purifier ACN-60ML (2-PC-SET) - OEM for?

If you plan on cleaning the thermal paste off of something, just get rubbing alcohol (I've got isopropyl alcohol 91% that I bought at Target for about $3) and use some cotton swabs (Q-Tips). These are usually 2 things people already have in their homes.
