I'm not sure I've seen a Sci Fi Horror movie that really impressed me besides Aliens. The original Alien is a case where I can see why a lot of people loved it when it came out, but it's so overexposed that any potential scare or shock value it once held is gone.
Wait, scratch that. John Carpenter's The Thing is a really great sci fi/ horror/ action movie.
But apart from that most of the ones I've seen have been corny B fests.
I like dystopian views of the future because those are the most believable to me. The "everybody is now getting along" Gene Roddenbury vision of the future I just can't swallow. Even when Earth is united against a common foe such as in the novel/movie "Ender's Game" there's still alot of friction. Not a ridiculous amount of friction, but obvious jockeying for position once the war is over.
I recently saw the movie "Edge of Tomorrow" with Tom Cruise, and I would have liked to hear more about the recent "cease" to hostilities. Who do you think would make a power play to get all that land in Western Europe?
Some favorites in no particular order:
1) Total Recall (1990 version)
2) Blade Runner
3) Soylent Green
4) The Road Warrior (Mad Max 2)
5) The Thing (1982 version)
6) Dredd
My Top 5 Sci-fi Horror Movies are:
5. Event Horizon.
4. Resident Evil.
3. Silent Hill.
2. Predators. [reboot]
1. Alien.
It may not be the best Horror Sci-Fi movies, but I do enjoy my top 5 picks.
1- The Thing
2- Dreamcatcher (2003)
3- From Beyond (1986)
4- Hardware (1990)
5- Screamers (1995)
6- Shivers (1975)
7- Split Second (1992)
8- Demon Seed (1977)
9- Splice (2009)
1- The Thing
Best horror movie I've ever seen. It really made me shit my pants. The game was terrific too.
I love horror movies and video games about crazy scientists experimenting and creating a biological disaster, at least when done right. The Thing had that and its events took place in the north pole I think which is a place that I believe to be befitting for horror movies in general. The mere reality of being in the north pole is horrifying on its own.

yeah! totally agreed about the whole north pole thing. The thing is the only movie that has given me nightmares as an adult. it amazes me how someone could've possibly come up with a sci-fi story more than 80 year ago that is still scary and scientifically reliable enough to be adapted into movies.
@VaguelyTagged: I like to watch the the 2011 movie of The Thing and then the older one straight after, as the older version starts exactly where the newer one finishes coming together to make one epic movie experience.
@EasyComeEasyGo: I don't really think Silent Hill can be considered Sci Fi... I enjoyed the movie a lot more than many people but it's clearly just a pure horror movie.
@VaguelyTagged: You liked Dreamcatcher? I thought it was a really bad adaptation of one of Stephen King's most mediocre novels. (This is coming from somebody who loves Stephen King btw).

great! not every one has had the chance to see them in that order. plus, the 2011 adaption is pretty great in terms of continuity ( with only a few errors i assume) so you won't be disappointed.

i haven't read the book and hated the movie the first time i saw it. but it grew on me for some reason when i watched it again and has been one of my favs since then. why did you think it was bad?

It was paced poorly and the way the characters were handled was just incredibly cheesy. Both are my main issues with the book, too. The plot in general was just meh.
I would say John Carpenter's The Thing. While I like Alien, and Aliens scared the *bleep* out of me in theater, The Thing remains very creepy and thought provoking even today, which I think makes it the best example of a sci-fi horror story. Even the new one (which is a prequel) is decent, but just can't seem to reach the standard set by the original.
1- The Thing
2- Dreamcatcher (2003)
3- From Beyond (1986)
4- Hardware (1990)
5- Screamers (1995)
6- Shivers (1975)
7- Split Second (1992)
8- Demon Seed (1977)
9- Splice (2009)
Screamers is such a bad movie yet so good, simple due to Peter Weller.

Screamers is a horrible piece of shit. You should feel bad that it even made your list ;-P
I'd say my top 10 are

you suck.
The original Thing (51) scared me to death when I was a kid.
The 53 War of the Worlds was much scarier than the one with Cruise.
Either one of The Fly (original or remake) but not Fly II, which was dumb.
Alien was probably the best of the franchise (imho).

I am not sure if it would or wouldn't simply because I am not sure if I could name 10 sci-fi horror movies to begin with, it's a pretty narrow category that not many movies come out for..
