Because its cheap.
Because it has MSG (I hear that gives u cancer).
Its honestly the best food I could possibly find for 10-25 cents (on sale), but I still rarely eat it.
1. It's cheap
2. It's an easily prepared hot meal
3. It doesn't taste terrible
Personally, ramen cups are too salty for my tastes. I'd take a nice bowl of oatmeal over them any day of the week.

1. It's cheap.
2. It's easy to make.
3. It's quick to make.
4. There's sort of an obsession with "foreign foods" in the United States, particularily those from Europe and those from "Eastern Cultures". I'd like to be able to just attribute this to crazed wannabe japanese anime fans, but the truth is that this actually goes way back to the 50s-60s or so with the whole Chop Suey and Chinese Takeout craze. Anyway, although Ramen doesn't exactly represent the height of Eastern Cuisine, the fact that it's Asian-esque, Cheap, and Easy to make makes it quite popular.
