Why do all cops get fat?

I dont mean for this topic to get offensive. Its just that all the young cops are strong and fit and they look like they could run a marathon. But as they get older and start indulging in more and more donuts, they get fat. Alot of the older cops (35, 40+) get fat. I think they should HAVE to stay fit, not just be fit once. What do you think? Should they have freedom to be as fat as they want, or should the protectors of the law be as fit as possible?

Why do 40 year old cops have the bodies of 40 year old men? It's a mystery.

Because, like other humans, in which cops are....well, that pretty much explains my point.

I kind of agree. All police officers in any state/province should be required to pass a basic fitness test (adjusted for their age and/or potential disabilities) to remain on the force. Overweight cops don't exactly inspire people to obey laws.

Isn't that the case with most people in America?, maybe they are the ones you are focusing but it seems to be the case with almost every person in the country.

The same situation happened to my dad in the military he was in great shape early in his enlistment he's moved up the ladder alot and is now a Master Chief I suppose the Higher your Rank and age in the Military F.D and Police. The less people care about your weight.

Although there are certain body fat standards set, you go over the set limit they discharge you.

I know, who will ever know. Also you fail to mention that as you age as a police officer your rank increases. A high rank might mean but the age of 40 years old you are a lieutenant or captain, meaning your not the one chasing down bad guys and storming into every possible building on raids and whatnot. You would most likely be at a station house supervising a precinct/district/area, addressing the patrolmen and sergeants and whatnot. You would be going out onto the street for crime scenes, hostage situations and whatnot to control multiple patrolman at once.

everyone in america dosent have the responsibility of upholding the law and putting thier life in the line. Cops do. They should be able to do it as well as possible, that means cutting down that beer belly.

At first, they are on the streets looking for speeders and other traffic violators. After they get a couple of tickets for the day, its time for some Dunkin Donuts. (they say quotas don't exist, but then how would they make money?) Later in their career, they can either be radio dispatch or more like an office job, but there will still be more Dunkin Donuts. They hardly are on foot pursuit so their thunder thighs get even more thunderous from just sitting and driving. This, of course, is the typical NJ cop...

Because once they get their own cop car all they do is cruise around in it all day and barely ever get out of it. There job is similar to an office job, they rarely ever have to get out of their car. Sure they get in to foot chases but probably only like once or twice every year. Not to mention up here in Canada cops get free Tim Hortons, and they make sure to get value out of that because i'm always seeing cops in Tim Hortons getting donuts and coffee haha.

For everybody asking if im serious. Telling me stereotypes and saying because its like an office job... Yes im serious, its an observation, its what ive seen. And it should still be mandated to be fit, how would you feel if the guy that murdered your mom was running, but the cop was fat and couldnt catch up? Sure they will get fat from just sitting around in a car, but they should still have to go through the exersizes and stay fit.

I hope you do realize that cops aren't the only group of people that gain weight as they age. Also, not all cops (old or young) are fat, so why make such a moronic statement?

I didnt literally mean ALL cops are fat. But from what ive seen, alot of the older cops do get fat, the question was, Should they be allowed to get fat, or should the protectors of the law be mandated to stay fit? Did you read the op or just the title?
#25 Posted by brandojones (3103 posts) -

Desk jobs and police cars. They don't get that much exercise from them.

Oh, and that reminds me:http://thechive.com/2010/08/06/to-serve-and-procrastinate-24-photos/

You know odd thing is ive never seen a fat police man here in the UK
#31 Posted by XilePrincess (13130 posts) -
Yes, all cops sit and eat donuts constantly. That's just as much of a stereotype as black people eating fried chicken. Some do, some don't. By the time a person hits middle age, their metabolism slows down and they're not all that likely to have rock hard abs anymore or be in general as fit as they used to be. You can't expect a cop who works late hours on paperwork to make the healthiest snacking choices all the time, but even those who do dedicate themselves to eating healthy are still victims of aging. It's really not even necessary for the really old cops to be as fit as the younger cops, because the old ones aren't there to do the grunt work. They're the press-release people, the talking-to-the-family people, etc. not the first responders to something that requires physical strength and endurance.

As they get older the work in the office more since they are higher up and don't have to drive around a get criminals like the young cops that just joined

The ones I see are usually in relatively better shape than us average citizens in that age group, if a comparison really needs to be make

Donuts!

#35 Posted by OrianaDorta (3112 posts) -

Too much donuts and hot dogs?

They're probably married and their wives give them too many sandwiches?

'cuz they're old and tired?

I don't know...

#36 Posted by ANlMOSITY (701 posts) -

Most cops are fat because when they're not out catching people doing drugs, then they're eating food and fattening up for the winter.

40 year olds are not by nature extremely overwieght.. Though I rarely see this with most police officers.. But some it boggles the mind how they are on the force at all or at very least in a desk position.
