...so secretive about their age? I've gotten pretty good about asking questions for context clues (Do you remember where you were when Space Shuttle Challenger exploded? 4th grade social studies, hunh?), but dag dang what's the big deal?

In mid-life things get a bit difficult to judge because people of the same age can appear otherwise. My neighbor is the same age I am (36) and she looks like she could be my mom because she spent her teens in a bikini under the sun (I was inside hunched over electronic bits). It really helps to know things like this, such as when I have to introduce her to someone (you introduce the older to the younger first).

The makeup doesn't help. I've seen women turn into teens after they washed their faces.

Why do they like us confused? :?

I never got it either. Not telling your age or lying about it doesn't make you any younger. You are what you are.

Because they don't want you to know how much their biological clock is ticking. Woman know men find them more desirable during their childbearing years.

I met a girl who I thought was a sophomore in High School... but after talking to her, it turned out that she was a post graduate from college and 23 years old. When I heard that, I was like "DA HAAIL?!"

When a woman does not want to tell you her age

1. She a grandmother

2. She knows your much younger

3. She is being cagey because she has a man or is broke

I think because society has a double standard on age. Older men are called distinguished. Women are just called old. Look at your local news casts to see what happens with age. The men can stay...women get replaced.

Social stigma, judgement. LJ also brings up a good point about how we react differently between men and women of the same age.

It depends. I find many demure 30/40-somethings far more alluring than a teen/20-something in prostitute garb.

Maybe society has done this to them. Women want to be desirable and they seem to associate this with youth. Most movies have an old average looking man with a young sexy hot looking woman. How many times do you see a old lady with a young dark hansomely strapping man? Imho, I think women have develope low slf esteem because of this. They wear makeup, fake hair, nails, eye lashes, high heels, and sometimes augment their body parts just to feel pretty, unfortunately, these same women hardly ever find a real man because they themselves are living a lie. They will always attract the attention of shallow men that will only offer them temporary happiness.

As silly as it can be, and actually is, it is just something that was a common means to spark curiousity. Women do like to attract men ya know. A woman not telling you her age is a way to say.. I have a secret. While it fails quite a bit it also succeeds as well. Some guys like that sort of play even if it sounds childish to many of us. So i could be to avoid stigmas associated with age or it can be a means to actually bring someone in closer.

The same reason it's rude to ask about their weight. Just by looking you can ballpark someone's weight, but they still act like it's a big secret.

Of course I don't know what that reason is.

First result of introduction etiquette on google had to this to say: 'A younger person is introduced to an older person. The older persons name is stated first. (Aunt Ruth, I want you to meet my roommate, Mimi Jackson. Mimi, this is my aunt, Mrs. Cox)' from skimming it fits with the notion of introducing the inferior to the superior (for supervision or w/e)

Yup, you present Aunt Ruth first. As in my example above:

Mrs. Gibbs, I'd like you to meet Sarah. Sarah, this is Mrs. Gibbs, she was one of my teachers in high school.

But maybe I'm being confused by them distinguishing presenting and introducing. To me, the first "Mrs. Gibbs" is the primary introduction.

Women are always buying products to give the illusion they are more youthful than they actually are, this is why they're reluctant to break the illusion by giving their real age. Pretty simple really.

I think because becoming older is associated with looking worse. You get wrinkles, the boobs begin to sag, the skin doesn't glow as much, hair turns gray, etc etc. That's why so many try to look young.

But lying about one's age doesn't get rid of wrinkles or make a person any younger so it still doesn't make sense.
