FDR
Saw us through WW2 to victory
Made the U.S. into an economic superpower
Created as safety net for the poor/middle class.
St. Ronald Reagan of the House United States, first of his name, King of the Conservatives, Lord of the Western World, and Protector of the realm.

FACTS. FDR was amazing for the middle class and poor.
FDR's initiatives would be considered evil communist welfare for minorities by today's right wing party :(
LOVED Bill Clinton. best years of prosperity in my lifetime were under his presidency. I just started working as a teenager when he was president and I remember us getting checks from the government just for being employed.
historically I'll probably go with FDR. he really established a middle class and the way of life for people in America who weren't rich. He really closed the gap between the very rich and the very poor.
Jimmy Carter. He was only a one term president, but the circumstances in which he was elected played a large role in that. The Camp David Accords alone are worth a place in the top 4 IMO. He's the only president to bring real peace to the Middle East, one of the reasons why he is one of four presidents to win the Nobel Peace Prize. He's also the only US President not to wage war while in office. And he founded the Department of Energy and the Department of Education. He wasn't from some privileged background. He was a peanut farmer before he was elected, which is awesome.
Lincoln sounds like a decent fellow.
Heard he killed a bar with his bar hands. Wait, maybe he just passed the bar. Either way works !

Sounds like he was a awesome prez in his term. Why wasn't he re elected twice by the people for all the good things he's done? :)
@indzman:
Four reasons. 1) Post-Nixon the American people were extremely distrustful of anybody in the white house. 2) He gave back the Panama Canal which angered moderates and republicans, even though it probably kept us out of a war. He made a ton of unpopular decisions like that which have been favorably viewed in retrospect. Most presidents would not have made those choices, especially in their first term. Another being SALT II deal which capped nuclear proliferation. 3) He was unfairly blamed for the Iranian Revolution and the huge gas shortages that followed. This is nothing new. All presidents are blamed for gas prices/availability, but what happened in the late 70's was extraordinarily bad. 4) In 1980 he went up against Ronald Reagan, a charismatic actor with early onset Alzheimer's and a penchant for jelly beans who would go on to run the country into the ground with absurd tax cuts for the rich, the ransacking of social security, the implementation of gross government spending which tripled our national debt, the funding of terrorists who would become al-Qaeda, and the denial of HIV/Aids' existence until the 7th year of his presidency which resulted in the deaths of thousands of Americans.
William Henry Harrison. Died in office after a month and thus, didn't have enough time to f*ck sh*t up.

Because people would rather watch Catching up with the Kardashians instead of of Ken Burns documentary. In other words, Jimmy Carter was spitting out truth about how to turn things around for the country when people just want to be told that things will be alright. It's no surprise Reagan came into the picture and did just that while dessimating the country financially and culturally.
In terms of best Presidents, FDR was definitely a badass that took control when the country was at one of its bleakest points and helped turn it into a world power. Granted, the war had a huge effect on that but his impact was absolutely important as well.
I'll also say Barack Obama was one of the best Presidents also. Endorsed gay marriage, signed the Lilly Ledbetter Act for fair pay regardless of gender, financial / Wall Street reforms, pushing for free community college for everyone, Health Care reform, made the FCC enforce net neutrality, provided millions of undocumented immigrants who grew up in the country an avenue to become legal residents, ended the embargo with Cuba, etc. All while being accused of being an unamerican pinko-Marxist Muslim extremist sympathizer who'll ruin this country.
Considering I've only been alive for a handful of them (Carter, Reagan, H.W. Bush, Clinton, W. Bush, Obama), I can only speak to those presidents. We all know that history books are not always reliable accounts of historical fact. We also know that the media wasn't as pervasive during the early years of the U.S., so there was likely a lot of shady stuff that was undertaken by past presidents who are widely well-regarded that we know nothing about.
Clinton was my favorite contemporary president. I despise H.W. Bush and Reagan for some of the shady stuff they were involved in...Iran Contra, Crack/Cocaine, escalation of the drug war, the Afghani mujahaideen, playing both sides of the Iran/Iraq war, etc.

Funny you mentioned that considering Clintion had an affair with Monica Lewinsky. My point is you only them threw media.

I really don't care about a President's personal life. Jefferson is well known to have numerous children with his slaves and they probably had to replace the Oval office carpet after JFK. I care about their domestic, foreign, social, and fiscal policies.
Are you really just reiterated my point regarding the media. We know so much more, and mostly the bad, about contemporary presidencies.
never been a fan of Ronald Reagan personally. However I must say that I am a Texan and he is revered in the state of Texas he is honored he is sainted he is memorialized.
my upbringing probably has something to do with it is my parents and family generally disliked ground Reagan is a hole. however it cannot be denied that Ronald Reagan waged a war on drugs once they got into the inner cities. He was front and center to make sure the drug users and drug pushers were being put in prison. Under his presidency a drug dealer got more years in prison than a convicted rapist or murderer.
if Reagan spend as much time keeping the drugs out of our country as he did putting the users in to jail he very well could have a eradicated crack cocaine in the United States.

Why wouldn't you be able to pick a favorite president if you aren't from America?
Politicians screw all of us so the best president? I'd have to say they are the ones on currency. At least it's useful for now.
Of the most recent presidents, Clinton was decent. Of the old ones, I'd say George Washington. He set some very good precedents - most revolutionaries install themselves as dictators after their success, but Washington stepped away from it. It was years later that he ran for president and let ballots and not his soldiers, put him in office.
