Hey, so i have to write a paper about a nation hero/heroine from germany and i am thinking of either Albert Einstein or Claus von stauffenberg. Einstein would be alot easier to do but i'm not sure if he would really be counted as a "hero". What do you guys think? Also open to other suggestions.

For those of you who don't know Claus was a SS officer who attempted to assasinate Hitler Tom Curise plays him in the new movie Valkyrie.

Stauffenberg, Einstein fits better in the "personality" spot.

Einstein was a German Jew, so he got out of there and became a US citizen in his later years. They would likely consider him a noteworthey German sure, but not a "hero" per se. Stauffenberg, on the other hand, was a German patriot who died for Germany rather than Hitler I'd put him in the same boat as Nathan Hale is to the United States, though the circumstances were completely different.

It's generally a good idea in essays to pick something contraversial as it alows you to do both sides of the argument. Though if you want a one sided obvious hero then Gustav Stresemann is a good choice. He was a politician who could have stopped Hitler ever coming to power as he stopped inflation cancelled loads of the reperations payments and extended the pay back time by decades. If he hadn't have died the dictatorships of Papen, Schliecher and Hitler would have never happened.

First of all...Stauffenberg was certainly NOT a SS officer. He was an officer of the German Army. There's a huge difference. Secondly, I suggest you write about Bismarck instead.

I don't think either of them really conferred much benefit on Germany. Von Stauffenberg's plot failed, while Einstein abandoned Germany and emigrated to the US.

I recommend picking Erwin Rommel. He was an accomplished military commander and was regarded as a war hero in Germany, but his contempt for the crimes of the Nazi regime makes him a "safe" choice for your paper. (Indeed, he was also linked to the plot against Hitler and forced by the SS to commit suicide.)

At the time Hitler provided some immense relief for the economically distraught Germany, plus he gave people hope after they had been financially destroyed by the other European powers. I'd try to argue this as it's a more unique standpoint, and it shows that you can be a hero to some but not to others.

Stresemann might be a good option. I wouldn't class Einstein as a German hero, seeing as he became an American citizen.

Two words: Wilhelm Reich.

I mean, technically he was born in Austria-Hungary, but hey, that was Germany for a while, right?

For something really off the beaten track:

1. Enrich Heartmann. Go google it and look up "Bubi". His life story is simply amazing (Just like Japanese ace Saburo Sakai)

2. For some one really controversial but NOT Hitler Enrst (or Ernest) Rudel. Again, google it. Quite a character he is!

what? -.-

no it wasn't austria is austria and germany is germany that's a whole difrent country, it's like writing about a US hero and picking someone from canada...

althrough germany wanted to make one country with austria, but that would require austria to give up all her belongings that aren't native austrian (which was quite a big part) and they didn't want to agree with this, so germany united without austria.

and Claus von Stauffenberg was a Wehrmacht officer not SS, quite a difrence.

I know his heritage was Prussian but he came to prominence after what we call Germany unified to become Germany... 1848 if I remember correctly. I know they tried in 1848, but I think that failed... or was that Italy?

Actually Stressemann solved alot of those problems. After he died though Germany went downhill and had various dictators.Hitler sort of resolved them, they would have been solved in time without war if Stressemann hadn't died.
