Who are your choices for the worst presidents of the United states and why?

As with my previous list, this is going to be a VERY controversial list. This will be from the perspective of an lolbertarian. Meaning it'll contain many of the most beloved and popular presidents of U.S. history. I'll get a lot of flak for sharing my top 10 least favorite presidents. Here goes nothing.

1. Woodrow Wilson:

  • Created the Federal Reserve.
  • Entered World War I and brutally occupied numerous countries.
  • Racially segregated the military and endorsed the KKK.
  • Incarcerated protesters with the "Espionage Act of 1917".
  • Instituted prohibition.
  • Supported eugenics.
  • Instituted the federal income tax.
  • Nationalized the economy.
  • Imposed draft conscription.
  • Authorized "Palmer Raids".

2. Abraham Lincoln:

  • Intentionally provoked the Civil War.
  • Unconstitutionally suspended habeas corpus.
  • Ordered mass execution against the Sioux Indians.
  • Signed the "National Bank Act".
  • Censored the press and imprisoned political protesters without trial.
  • Introduced the "Greenback" currency.
  • Introduced the U.S.'s first income tax.
  • Instituted a military draft.
  • Ordered martial law and restricted firearms via "Proclamation 113".
  • Deported freed black slaves to Liberia and Haiti.

3. Franklin D. Roosevelt:

  • Allowed the Pearl Harbor attack to drag the U.S. into World War II.
  • Authorized the firebombing of Dresden, Hamburg, and Tokyo.
  • Forcefully moved Japanese, Italian, and German citizens into internment camps.
  • Served four terms.
  • Imposed gun control via "National Firearms Act of 1934".
  • Signed the "National Industrial Recovery Act".
  • Enacted laws without the approval of the Supreme Court.
  • Suspended the "Gold Standard" and seized gold from citizens.
  • Authorized the "Manhattan Project".
  • Raised numerous taxes.

4. Lyndon B. Johnson:

  • Lied about the "Gulf of Tonkin Incident" to justify an undeclared war against Vietnam.
  • Covered up Israel's deliberate attack on the USS Liberty.
  • Caused massive deficits with the "Great Society" program.
  • Passed the "Gun Control Act of 1968".
  • Signed the egalitarian "Civil Rights Act of 1964".

5. George W. Bush:

  • Began the illegal Iraq war.
  • Signed the "Patriot Act".
  • Enacted "No Child Left Behind".
  • Signed the 2008 bailout.
  • Created the Guantanamo Bay detention camp.

6. Barrack Obama:

  • Killed four U.S. citizens without due process.
  • Expanded Bush's drone strike program.
  • Invaded Libya without Congressional approval.
  • Passed the "NDAA".
  • Expanded domestic government surveillance via "PRISM".

7. Harry S. Truman:

  • Lead an unnecessary war in Korea without congressional approval.
  • Authorized the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
  • Nationalized the steel industry to fund war efforts.
  • Took control of railroads by threatening to draft railroad workers.
  • Created the CIA and NATO.

8. Ronald Reagan:

  • Responsible for the "Iran-Contra Affair".
  • Invaded Grenada and funded the Mujaheddin.
  • Tripled the national debt.

9. William McKinley:

  • Started the contrived "Spanish-American War".
  • Annexed Hawaii.
  • Raised taxes to fund imperialist policies.
  • Signed the "Dingley Act".
  • Intervened in the "Boxer Rebellion".

10. Richard Nixon:

  • Permanently ended the "Gold Standard".
  • Created the EPA.
  • Created the DEA.

Lincoln is one of those presidents who people either love (the vast majority) or strongly dislike (a small minority), he was very controversial at his time. It seems to me that there are a lot of parallels between Lincoln and George W. Bush, so it's interesting you dislike them both.

I was surprised at some of your choices: Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, McKinley, Reagan, Hoover, Eisenhower, George H.W. Bush, and John Adams.

I do have some questions:

1. What were the Palmer raids?

2. Did FDR actually seize gold from citizens? I thought he prohibited investments in gold bullion, (which I don't agree with any way) but I don't know if he actually had the feds take people's gold?

3. What is your rationale for describing the Iraq War as illegal. The war was authorized by congress, and Iraq had been in violation of the cease-fire terms that ended the "first" Gulf War (specifically they had longer-range missiles than they were allowed to have).

4. Did the Iraq sanctions (which were ended by G.W. Bush after the Iraqi regime was toppled) kill 1 million Kurdish children, or do you mean Iraqi children. I would find it odd if the sanctions did so much harm to Kurdish children, given that the U.S. protected the Kurds from Saddam by enforcing a no-fly-zone (Saddam also generally prohibited his ground forces from going into the Kurdish region though the U.S. never said they would stop Iraqi ground forces, this allowed the Kurds to have quite a bit of autonomy). I do know that most of the people who died as a result of the sanctions (and the Iraqi governments reactions to the sanctions - i.e. spending what money they did have on their military and presidential palaces) were children.

5. The pharmaceutical company was thought to be a disguised chemical weapons plant.

6. Why are you so opposed to the Guantanamo Bay detention facility? What is the difference between that specific facility and other detention facilities elsewhere?

TC is a moron and a far-righter.

Also, I spot some contradictions in your list. If I read that correctly, you criticize FDR for enacting the "Gold standard" , and yet, criticize Nixon for ending the "Gold standard" ....

There are also numerous inconsistencies and false claims.

TC, get your head out of your ass.

"Planted the seeds for the FDA."

This is a negative to you? In what world is the FDA a bad thing? Sure they're inefficient and slow to approve things, as well as approve some things that maybe shouldn't be allowed, but to say it's a bad thing is ridiculous. I am in no way a democrat (wouldn't ever affiliate with either political party) but we need regulation, and food and drug safety is pretty damn important. Do you think we should just let companies put whatever the hell they want on the market, regardless if it's dangerous or not?

Some of the other ridiculous ones include

"Created the CIA and NATO."

"Permanently ended the "Gold Standard"."

"Allowed the Pearl Harbor attack to drag the U.S. into World War II."

"Invaded Libya without Congressional approval."

What a joke.

OP's list isn't so much controversial as it is a libertarian litmus-test.

Anyone who mentions a president of the past 20 years (a) knows little about history (b) lacks historical context (c) probably knows better but wants to use history as a personal sledgehammer to promote their modern political views.

IMO, Franklin Pierce is the worst. A total flip-flopper (he literally changed his views everytime someone talked to him) who fought to expand slavery in the United States years before the Civil War. And during the Civil War, as a private citizen, he sided with the confederacy.

He criticized FDR for "suspending" the Gold standard, not enacting it.

He must mean that H.W. Bush got the U.S. unnecessarily involved in the war, i.e. that he thinks the U.S. should not have gone to war to liberate Kuwait.

I hate Reagan's administration with a burning passion.

He gutted America's social programs, as was a total corporate puppet. Military spending was hugely increased as was the power of the government. "Government is the problem" my ass. It always disgust me when someone who praises this scumbag calls himself a "libertarian". Since Reagan, the U.S. went downhill and every administration after him was just as bad if not worse.

According to you its not America's fault for whats happening in the middle east of course not you are always the innocent arent you? whats happening in Ukraine its Russia's fault right? its never America's fault that has 500 bases around the global and then they claim that Russia is an Aggressor yet i am quite positive all those bases are all there just to protect those nations right?

Shiites and Sunnis have been going at each other's heads since well before America even existed as a country. Its not as if before the Iraq invasion that these two groups were holding hands and in peace. Saddam himself instigated the sectarian divide in Iraq for decades for his own benefit. America certainly bears some responsibility for the current state of the middle east but to act like the middle east would be a paradise if the west never had gotten itself involved in the region is delusional. Is it America that forces Arabian women to dress up as beekeepers? Is it America that is butchering Arab Christians and members of rival Muslim sects en masse? The west is going to look out for its interests all across the globe including the middle east - I'm the last person to defend this kind of behavior but it is simply a reality about the world we live in just as real as gravity is. However if the Arab people were an unified people it'd be much easier to fight against western imperialism. Cutting each others heads off only makes the job of western imperialists that much easier. Nasserism has been replaced with Islamism and its Arab political leaders that deserve the brunt of the blame for that.

At least he's posting. You can't knock him for that. I mean, isn't that the whole point of this forum?
