Poll Which style of Freedom Fries are the best? (11 votes)

Shoestring 27%
Steak Cut 18%
Curly 27%
Waffle 27%

I'm all over those Steak Cut fries, they actually have some substance to them. Everyone once and again I can go for waffle fries, but shoestring fries are gross...especially the super-salty fast-food variety.

Now I do miss poutine, they just don't have it down here in the south. When I lived in Canada, though, I most certainly gained an appreciation for it.

Curly fries as they have that awesome seasoning.

I've come to the conclusion that regular fries are more addictive than tasty. The grease, salt, sugar, and crunch all light up your pleasure centers, but the taste of the potato and breading are rather bland. This is part of the reason I have mostly given regular fries, that and they are unhealthy for me.

The curly fries on the other hand have flavor, and since they are available at less places I eat less fries throughout the year which can only be a good thing.

@br0kenrabbit: Don't come back until you can call them by their original name. Freedom Fries? It's no wonder people hate America. One stupid little dispute and you call them freedom fries. Ridiculous.

I'll take my FRENCH FRIES any way. So long as they aren't smothered in salt.

Can you not get cheese curds? It's fairly simple to make (if you can make a good gravy mind you).

Can't get cheese curds and our gravy here is white (sausage gravy). This is the south, sir. You bring that Yankee gravy this way and you're gonna get a boot in your face.

I won't eat anywhere that sells french fries as "freedom fries". IMO though steak fries are too thick to cook right, too soft in middle typically, waffle fries weird shape also leads to under-cooking.

I prefer "whatever you'd call them" the kind they typically serve at McDonald's, they're thin so they fry crispy easy and have a great texture.

Thin fries are best. Why? Because the best part of fries is the surface, and thin fries have a larger surface-area-to-volume ratio.

And yes...I agree that many places oversalt shoestring fries. But since the salting occurs AFTER cooking, that's not a valid criticism of the style of fries. There's nothing inherent about shoestring fries that says that you have to salt the living hell out of them after cooking them.

More surface area = more grease.

If I can hold a fry horizontal and it flops like a limp dick, it ain't going in my mouth.

I totally forgot about this...

There's still places in the US (I assume more so than when the term first came about) that still refers to them as 'freedom fries'?

"Freedom Fries", Really?

No, Really?

Is "French" such a horrible word you decided to rename them and went full on " Let us liberate them fries and in doing so they'll be called Freeom Fries from now on!"?

Do you napalm the potato sticks so it'll fit the theme of the name aswell?

no I just don't care for such heavy handed jingoism

ironic that you should say that, the freedom fries came about due to France's opposition to invading Iraq, which America's push for removing the country's secular dictator resulted in a sectarian power vacuum largely responsible for the religious extremism and violence the region is now seeing

"Freedom Fries" originated due to French opposition of invading Iraq, American right wing neo-cons took the "french" out of "french fries" and replaced it with "freedom", it was George Dubya Bush's most favorite word, probably because he watched too much Braveheart.

What happened was when the French refused to participate in the 2003 Iraq War some places renamed the fries out of protest. Personally, despite the fact that I was part of the invasion I thought it was one of the most petty things in the world and I never called them by that name.

Funny thing is if Wikipedia is to be believed, some anti-war establishments in the US renamed them "Impeach Bush" fries in response.

yeah... its joke that people like to pretend to take seriously.

Years ago, there were a group of rednecks who like french fries, but becuz the typical American generally likes to put down the French and make fun of them and lable them pussies, they didnt want to acknowledge a food they like as French.

So they came up with the most asinine name Americans love to spew all the time... "Freedom".

So basically its just removing French and making it American, while pretending its has always been American. Its like taking sushi that is a Japanese, but Americans dont want to give Japan credit for a food that Americans like (becuz acknowledging other culture's/countries greatness in whatever way, is unpatriotic to America), so they pretend it was never Japanese and was American all along.

And no... this never really caught on, but there are people out there still trying to make it stick.

Floppy fries is a grease problem, that just means they are undercooked. You've gotta cook them longer so that the outside gets nice and crispy.
