To keep the more annoying spammers and trolls at a manageable level. Basically just a formality

My problem with TDH is that it appears to be really cliquey. I've lurked there a few times and it doesn't seem all that welcoming for new members

Yeah tdh can be a bit hard to get your bearings since it's very much based on long established group dynamics . Though there have been a few new users that have integrated themselves well enough the last couple of months.
