when do you think we will be able to travel to other solar systems?

i wonder when we will be advanced enough to travel to other planets and have colonies set up there. also it would be interesting if we someday interacted with other intelligent life out there in the galaxy sorta like mass effect. what do you guys think when will this happen?

If it ever happens, it will be centuries, perhaps millennia, 'til it happens.

It will never happen. The distance is just too far. Even if we find a way to travel close to the speed of light (not going to happen) it would still take years to travel to the closest solar systems.

Moon travel will probably have to become a "normal event," where people do it regualary without even thinking about it. First, we'll have to send people to Mars, then some of Jupiter's moons, Saturn and Uranus and Neptune moons, probably send people to Pluto and Charon as well. Then we'll have to send probes to these other solar systems in the first place, well, all that after we ever LOCATE them.

When Mars is colonised, humans can think about venturing further into our own Solar System, but I can't see us sending humans to another one, for at least 200 years.

NASA seems to prefer AI exploration anyway, its cheaper, safer and usually more accurate.

I think it'll be far longer than that, maybe 1000 years, 200 seems too soon.

I really don't think it's ever going to be a mainstream opportunity to just get up and go to another solar system or something. Perhaps within our solar system, maybe. But even at light speed traveling anywhere beyond our solar system is really quite insane.

Colonies in other solar systems won't happen for hundreds of years, perhaps 1000s. At the beginning they'll be by themselves too and the only way to get there will be by cryostasis for a few years. Until we can generate worm holes we won't be moving between solar systems on a regular basis, and it'll take 1000s of years of research till we get to that point... chances are w'll have blown ourselves up way before we complete it

The coincidence that results in making that technology can happen any time. Now, or in a thousand years.

yep, humans went from flying a flimsy wooden aircraft, to flying to the moon in under 50 years. Yet it took 500 years between the first musket and firing the first machine gun.

Never. The costs would be so astronomical, the space program would turn into a money black hole.
 I'm so sorry!
Never... The closest solar system to ours is like 5 to 9 light years away.. Meaning it would take 5 to 9 years to get to that if we could some how travel at the speed of light.. Long and behold we can go NO where near that, it would take all the energy the earth produces for an entire week to get a bowling ball to the speed of light.. Furthermroe we have numerous things like the solar winds to worry about.. The travel to the moon we didn't have much of a problem.. But near places like Mars, Jupiter etc.. The Radiation is real high.. Not to mention if their is a accident, it will be a instant failure because they will be too far away for any help what so ever.

.. We can get no where near the speed of light, and if we could it would only take a few years.. Though that would be entirely too long to begin with.

as much as i hope humans will leave the solar system i doubt it will happen because of sheer distance, the nearest solar system is 4 light years away which means with current tech it would take about 40,000 years to get there and this is assuming that there is habitable planet there, if not then it could be hundreds or even thousands of light years till we find somewhere that humans can survive.

even if we did develop faster than light travel it would still take a long time to get anywhere to the point that it wouldn't be cost effective to set up colonies, the only semi-realistic way is to create wormholes although this sort of tech is far from ahead of anything we have

In about 200 to a 1000 years from now on without it taking several lifetimes of journey.

It will be hundreds if not thousands of years till we physically visit another solar system. I mean look at us, we haven't even put a base on the moon. The closest object in the universe to us.

Though I guess you could chalk that up more to politics then lacking the tech.

Yeah, the Andromeda galaxy. Earth would probably be screwed then. That is if the sun hasn't expanded and destroyed Earth already. Then again, I don't really see the human race lasting billions of years.

we would be skrewed one of 3 ways

The Sun Explodes and Earth is Destryoed

The Sun blows up and We survive but get sucked into the black hole

Or Earth Just doesnt last long enuff

in a billion years the sun will have most likely erupted into a red giant engulfing all the rock planets, this would really ruin your day:P and yeah i'd say that humans wouldn't be around because we will most likely have evolved into another creature

Not sure, you never know when a breakthrough might come through that changes everything
