I saw this on CNN a bit ago, so I don't have a link yet. I'll put one up if I, or someone else finds one.

But apparently Texas' governer Rick Perry is pretty mad, and 'threatening' tosecede from the Union.

I'm not a political science major, but I think that has something to do with flipping Washington the bird and mooning the rest of the US, so to speak.

Would they really have the cajones to do this?

CNN people said this would be an act of treason and could potentially start a civil war, albeit a pretty short one.

Ok, I didn't read this, but the title seemed kinda interesting. Give it a go if you'd like.

This is kinda weird. Apparently there are a bunch of Texans out there that really do want to secede. Do they really think they can survive though? I think they'd probably fail miserably. Then when they're hungry and poor, the US will use Texas as a prison state.

Yeah...I don't think anyone that wants this realized how it's going to effect them. Anything with federal funding will immediately be pulled, this includes most universities, labs, anything to do with NASA, yeah, Texas would be a wasteland.

Also, I'm not sure this is true. But I heard that Texas doesn't have income tax or sales tax. So basically in order for their 'government' to sustain it self, it would need to start taxing. Unless they decided to print their own money, which would probably be worthless in the world economy. They would no doubt have to import a lot in order to survive.

I think the people that want this are under the impression that the entire state can be supported on the oil reserves.

Like always, the media way off in search of a story. What was said was meant as a joke; Texas is not harboring any serious plans to secede from the United States of America. Also I am displeased and a little offended by the answers available for the poll.

Now they're starting to act like Quebec.
Well at least texas has use to the states because they have lots of oil, but Quebec has nothing to offer to the rest of Canada except people who dont shut up about how Montreal is better than whatever city they are in and over representation in the government. I SAY AWAY WITH QUEBEC, LETEM SEPARATE ON OUR TERMS.

I have a feeling that if Texas took it's ball(oil) and went home. The US would steal the ball away. So to speak.

Actually as a Mexican American that lives in Texas, that's the one that offended me the most.

Back on topic, I saw the link you posted, and WOW was this thing distorted. The news report from NBC missed the very next part. After what was said, someone said something along the line of, "Now that you've identified yourself with right-wing extremists do you think we will be a terrorist state?" After which everyone began laughing.

Also the link about U.S. seccesion is just one of those propaganda websites that should be taken no more seriously than those obviously biased one-sided websites about popular topics (I.E. gun control, immigration, abortion).

this is such bad thinking.

1. The US, the largest consumer of oil, would likely embargo Texas (and thus the oil produced there)

2. Everywhere else would get their oil from somewhere else. Texas would still have the stigma of being a former-US state; South America has its own oil, Europe has it own oil, Russia has its own oil, and the Middle East has its own oil.

Texas could sell their oil, but the cost of shipping and the requirement to lower the prices so people could actually buy the oil would be insane.

Texas has good agriculture iirc, I think they could sustain themselves fairly well but the luxuries would quickly go out the window.

Canada has 2 notable separatist movements, one in Quebec (the big one) and a less prominent one in Alberta. There might also be a Newfoundland one too that has significant support.

Honestly, none of those provinces have left yet and I doubt Texas will be any different.

Its sad how I somewhat agree. I am sure many Canadians are getting fed up with Quebec with all its BS. For some reason in english canada we have to bend over backwards making sure we accommodate francophones yet in Quebec some people would spit on you asked for half of what we give them.

They'd take a few other states with them if they did leave the US... Alabama & Kentucky come to mind.

If they do leave, I hope they elect Hank Williams Jr. as their new leader.

That'd be incredible.
