The first 4 albums, of course. RTL and KEA are their only underrated albums, imo.

"Load" is insulted. Bleeding Me is one of their best tracks.

Really? This is even a question? This is like asking if people prefer the old trilogy or new trilogy of Star Wars.

Personally, I never enjoyed Metallica even when they were a legit Thrash band and not making power ballads...

Their first 2 records were decent...

Metallica formed in 1981, and released their first album in 1983.

Their first five albums are spectacular: Kill Em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, And Justice For All, and Black album.

These two are the absolute best of Metallica.

Also, since their first album is in '83 (Kill Em All) and the Black Album released in '91, Metallica's best years are from 1983-1991

Metallica didn't even form until '81, and though some tracks performed with Mustaine (as lead guitarist) did make its way to their 1st album, Kill Em All, Mustaine was thrown out of the band before it ever released.

EDIT: And since Kill Em All didn't release until '83, I consider '83 to be the mark the start of their Golden Years, and before that was their "founding years." So, 1983-1991 for me.

1980-1991

  1. Kill 'em All
  2. Ride the Lightning
  3. Master of Puppets
  4. ...And Justice For All
  5. Black album

Black Album (the 1991 album that made them mainstream) was a good Album (imo). But this is was the beginning of their "downfall" into mainstreamism. After this, the band had really changed their style......for mediocrity.

There's no debate about it. Anyone who KNOWS metal should NOT even debate about that.

2_Quiet_2_Riot
And yet their 90s records sold worse:? They had reached the limit of their old formula, nothing wrong with moving on.

Best album by Metallica? Easy: And Justice For All...that was a freakin' masterpiece.

So I guess 1988 would be my pick.

I liked when the Black Album came out too. I still remember watching the Mtv premier of Enter Sandman. It was huge.

And yes, I am that old.

You sir, are a silly goose. That album had some of the worst production quality I have ever heard from a major band. It was embarrassing. Plus, the drums sounded like tin cans.

And there dumb dog too, right?

On topic, after black album they took a much more hard rock approach, while some singles were (I love Fuel) most of it was just meh. Death MAgnetic however it great and hopes the next allbum follows that up with the same heaviness and sound.

To me the last good album Metallica made was "And Justice For All". Everything after that was downhill for them. I remember being all pumped for the release of The Black Album. I got it the day it released. I took that thing home, popped open the CD player and put it in. Listened to the first song...ok that sucks...second song.....sucks too, ect. ect.. I ended up throwing the album in the trash a week later.
