We humans are a curious species that is just how we are, but one thing most people don't want to dare with is their food, so my question to you people is: What is the most exotic/unknown food you've ever eaten?
I'm pretty much game for anything with a good flavour and texture if I'm sure it's hygienic. That said it's not like I've had many opportunities to eat anything I'd consider exotic, so I guess sushi or whatever...
My Aunt from the states doesn't want to eat Spanish seafood because the shellfish looks "scary". fuckin' lol
Escargot maybe? I've also eaten snake, shark, and frog. Frog legs I thought were disgusting (smelled and tasted like swamp), shark was anything to write home about, and snake while kind interesting is kinda oily. Escargot is delicious though especially when fresh and made well.

if the frog legs tasted and smelled like swamp the chef did something terribley wrong :p

Well the "chef" was my redneck friend who caught and cooked them out of the canal by my house lol. I've heard that when prepared right it it doesn't smell/taste like that so you're probably right. With that said, even without the swamp smell it didn't taste much different than chicken wings, so I'd rather just eat those instead heh.
@ianhh6: You scared of shrimps?
I think that's a species of lobster. Have it steamed and I'd gobble it up over beer.
Authentic stinky tofu. It was horrible.
Also mantis shrimps are pretty exotic as far as north america goes, I have not been in a restaurant where they serve them.
I think that is because it is endangered :s
@ianhh6: What shellfish?
Where did you get that from? No subspecie of mantis shrimps is considered endangered or even threaten.
I forgot I had ascidiacea sashimi before too, that's really weird and pretty exotic.
Are you running out of ideas? This is the second topic you created today that you created or participated in about a month ago =D
Baby octopus.No weird hentai stuff please.
Baby octopuses are fairly common in Asian restrauants. Now eating live octopuses, that's another matter.
Yeah but if you are like me and don't like sea food much its the best.
Well if you really want some crazy stuff they also serve octopus ink/tried it once and last time/.
A place I sometimes visit when I see some relatives has lovely Kangaroo and Buffulo steaks.
I've also had Camel, that's about it. Oh and Ostrich

For me, Fried Alligator was pretty exotic. Such a term is so relative, though, because what's rare depends on where you live and where you're from. Various forms of premium tuna like blue fin and fatty tuna at nice sushi restaurants. I've been to Manila a few times but I never braved Balut (fertilized duck embryo). I have a lot of Viet friends so jellied pigs blood and tripe are often on the menu.

Oh, and there's a burger in Vegas at a restaurant called "The Burger Bar" that I get every time I'm there. It's a Wagyu patty served with Foie Gras, shaved black truffles (both rare and expensive) and a black truffle sauce. It's a $65 burger.

Balut.
He He.
Is it as disgusting as it looks?
I can't say for sure what it tasted like because I was drunk every time I ate one. But, I ate it. So, it must have tasted good. Otherwise, I would've barfed it.
This now endangered species ... pangolin .....
but that was in the early 80's rural area in borneo island when I consume as a kid.
@hippiesanta: I actually had armadillo before, taste a bit like pork. Is that close?
could be .... pangolin taste like chicken (cook with curry and potatoes), and it's blood mix with some local liquor .. as elixir
@hippiesanta: but it is so adorable! D:
I know .. I ate an adult version (still cute) but It still makes me feel guilty when I think of it.
@jun_aka_pekto: hehehe beerbatter :3
I wouldn't know. I don't do any of the cooking. My wife's relatives do. In any case, my favorite exotic food is beer food in the form of sea food. My wife's relatives would buy blue crab, giant tiger prawn, and mussel by the bushel straight from the fishing boats. Then we'd spend the evening guzzling down beer and beer food until dawn the next day.
The above is the mild version. For the more hardcore, beer food is anything that flies, swims, or has four legs. He He. If you have pets, you better keep them indoors.
This is a good link for many beer foods. I have yet to try bats, chicken heads, and wood worms. The rest, I've already tried. The blood stew is really more of a mainstream lunch or dinner dish than beer food.

the Infamous Balut from the Philippines.
Watch as I dared to eat and even dared another friend to eat it with me.
Snake blood. Everything burned in my mouth when I took a sip and I can still feel it just typing this down.
