You know when you get a picture of a motorway or freeway and there is all of these streaks of cars lights going along the freeway and the stretch along the freeway, what is that effect called?

Same thing when you set the camera up so the lens are pointing up to the sky on a clear night.  That looks cool too.

Yep - just leave the shutter open for a few seconds and the camera steady on a tripod.
