What do you think of The Passion of the Christ?

For those of you who have seen The Passion of the Christ, what do you think of it? Do you think it's a genuinely good film? For those of you who are religious, do you think the film is disrespectful to Jesus? I like its realistic (though not completely historically or Biblically accurate) portrayal of first century Judea, and the events of Jesus's final hours. Honestly, before I saw the film, I never fully appreciated or imagined just how brutal Jesus's torment was; the descriptions in the Gospels don't go into explicit detail about his flogging and crucifixion, so actually seeing just how brutal it might have been was a wake-up call. Keep in mind that I don't think Jesus was necessarily flogged as badly as he was in the film, but I think that the depiction in the film helps one to imagine the potential severity of the event. I also like the emotion behind the performances; I think that even without the subtitles, the film would be just as impactful. The particular members of Jesus's ethnic brothers who pushed for his death came across as genuine religious fanatics (like those we have today in the M.E.), and as a genuinely bloodthirsty crowd that I'd be horrified of. As for the Roman soldiers, they are also convincingly portrayed, as sociopathic sadists. Other niceties are the costume and makeup design. By the way, I saw this film years ago, when it was released on DVD. I want to discuss it now because I've seen it again recently.

I remember liking it at the time I watched it, but that was years ago so I don't remember too much detail about it...

Boderline torture porn. And my Catholic wife agrees with me. We almost walked out of the theater because it was so difficult to watch.

It was a glorified snuff film designed to exploit money from christians. With that in mind it's probably the worst thing I've ever seen.

I only got to watch 3/4ths of the movie. I'm Jewish and while I sensed a bit of antisemitism, overall I was enjoying the movie. My wife, who is Catholic, forced me to stop the movie. It was far too gruesome for her and I think the whole Jesus being beat to hell and back was too much. She actually started crying a bit. Pretty silly honestly lol...

Anyways as a movie based part on history and part on fairy tale it was pretty good.

The plot twist at the end was ruined for me prior to the film's release. Some of my friends read the novelization that came out before the movie and the jerks told me what happens.

The film has anti-semitic undertones and makes it look llike Jews were killing Jesus, which did not happen. It was the Romans that killed him, this is a historical fact that any real biblical scholar will agree with.

You are oversimplifying the facts. It was the Pharisees and other groups of Jews who pushed for/ requested that he be put to death. He was put to death for violating their erroneous and stringent interpretation of the Torah. Yes, it was the Romans who actually whipped him and drove the nails into his hands and feet, but it was the Pharisees and other Jews who pushed for these things to happen. With that said, no-one is implying that it was all of the Jews who did this, just a subset of them. In the film and in the Gospels, there are Jews who are depicted as pleading on Jesus's behalf, such as the two Cohenim who complained that his "trial" was an outrage and a travesty, the sympathetic Jew who looked at him with pity when he was brought into the Temple for questioning, and another Jew who begged the Romans to leave him alone as he was being led to the site where he would be crucified.

I have an incredibly high tolerance rate to violence and i wasn't completely disgusted by this, but there really wasn't any reason for so much violence and suffering on screen.

It's gore porn.

On top of that, the movie was very boring.

Though, the interesting thing is, appearantly, the movie was "toned down" so they could play it on the big screen.
