I would have said the exact same thing You don't hear gay and "emo" that much when you get out of high school fortunately. I didn't hear of the word "emo" until I was posting on a forum in the beginning of college.

For example, interstates are referred to as "the " such as interstate 5 being called "the 5". I've also heard people talking about taking transit here in San Francisco as "the MUNI" and referring to stores as "the ". I'd say that qualifies as misuse, if not necessarily overuse.

Yeah, but that's common in all the Romance languages (well, Spanish and French, I don't know about Portugese specifically). In English it's not accepted usage, though it certainly is possible that the large Spanish-speaking population here in CA is the reason that it has come into use here. Possibly Spanish speaking migrants who learned English as they go are what introduced that here, though that's just speculation.
