Remember those neat commercials with Geoffrey the Giraffe and that annoying song? When I was young, Toys R Us was like THE store. I remember getting all my old school games there. Getting a game was like a mini quest, of sorts. We'd get one of those paper ticket things and take it to the register and then to this sealed off little room with a creepy old dude and wall to wall sealed games. I'd say Hi and such and he'd say, "hurry up, girlie, I have an ulcer the size of a watermelon." (It was a thing we had.) They also had the best Lego department ever back in the 80's. They had moveable Lego displays and everything.

Were you a big Toys R Us fan?

(here's a shot of their main store, in Manhattan.)

Yes. I would go there like every Saturday and would buy at least one WWE (WWF at the time) or WCW action figure. I would also regularly buy Spider-Man toys. I still go to Toys R Us every now and then for the videogame since they sometimes have good deals on them.

Oh yes, and the World of Nintendo was my favorite part of it, complete with the vouchers you took to the checkout area to get the game. I may need to run by there after work one day to get the exclusive Zoroark, actually...

I can still remember when, after tax, a GI Joe figure cost exactly $3.10.

I miss the days of going down the Sega Genesis section combing through the games back in an era when most games were great and having to take the little sheet of paper to buy it.

Yes, that place was like legend. The nearest one was like a 1 hour drive though, so I was only ever able to go there on very special occasion.

oh yeah! I was definitely a Toys R Us kid.

that song was just one of many massively effective ads that worked on me back in the nineties. Ranked right up there with cereal mascots.

Yeah, there was that whole, drawn-out process. That was awesome!

Nowadays, I go into Gamestop and talk to some dopey kid with all kinds of piercings all over his face and douchey thin beard/mustache.

What little sheets of paper? My parents weren't big fans of video games back in the day and I didn't get them very much until the N64 arrived. Had an NES and a few games though.

You go down the console aisle and all the game boxes would be displayed. Below the game display would be a sheet of paper for the game that you would take to the store room for them to get the game for you.

Used to go to one in a few cities away since my city never had one. Always was a huge day trip that my Dad would pretty much just let us buy anything. The GI Joe aisle was ridiculous and eventually the 21st Century line took over which was even better.

I still do every now and again. I still geek out when I come across those hard-to-find toys; the last time I did so I found a Transformers Masterpiece edition of Grimlock.

Yes, I'm a grown-ass man who still buys the occasional Transformers figure. What of it?!

The commercials were fantastic. Between those and the sears catalogue for christmas I was in toy heaven. I didn't ever get much of it though, but looking was still fun.

Oh gosh, that was the best part. We used to go almost every week. I remember my parents shelling out for every new NES and SNES game that came out. The RPGs were insane, they were like 84.99-89.99. I had a good 150-200 SNES games.
