If Portugal suck like in their match against Germany then I wouldn't be surprised if US managed a draw.

Strangely enough, as a Portuguese I'm "worried" against the US, which is something I never thought I'd say...the way Portugal played against Germany I'm thinking if the US team doesn't show up, Portugal might still lose 2-0...

There are plenty of hot spots in the US where soccer/futbol is wildly popular especially among the younger adults. There are plenty enough folks in the US who care about soccer. I would imagine many of those who are patriotic will care because it's another chance to wave the flag just like the other 31 teams in the tournament.

The US chances of winning are as good as any team in the tournament.

One thing in favor of the United States is that no Euro team has won the World Cup in the Western Hemisphere (up to this point). Hopefully, Portugal will join Spain and England among those Euro teams sent packing home.

Another is the heat and humidity. They just sap the strength out of those who aren't used to it. At least the USMNT have Florida which comes really close to matching Equatorial weather.

I can personally attest to the latter. It took me a long time to get used to the heat and humidity in both Colombia and the Philippines (also Qatar in summer). I was pretty miserable during that time of adjustment.

To all the people saying Americans don't care about football, the match between the US and Ghana almost got as much views as the NBA finals.

@korvus: Pepe being sent off ruined the Germany match, I can't see Portugal playing like that again.

I watched Portugal sweeden in the qualifiers and Portugal were fantastic.

They have enough about them to beat usa and Ghana.

Plus I have bet £10 on Portugal to make the final haha I get £130 back if they do

Surprisingly, that's not exactly true anymore. This World Cup has set records already and the US vs. Ghana match drew in 16 million viewers and that match was at 6pm on a week day. The one today against Portugal is at 6pm too... but on a Sunday during prime time. This is on ESPN but if ABC showed the US's games that number would be MUCH higher too. It's starting to average NBA Finals numbers which is really good.

Anyway, why be worried in the first place? It will be a fun watch and Americans should have no expectations since everyone pegged them to finish last in the group. Just enjoy the moment and cheer you on your team.

Never got why people enter sports threads just to say they don't care about the sport or the teams playing. Seems like why even click on in.

Well they have up to seven games for each two teams and it's only US. World Cup has 32 teams, who play 3 matches to advance, then you get to the knockout stage. Most groups have now played 2 games each. So there is quite a few games left

I agree. I was expecting 3 strikes, you're out and on the very first game, the US beat Ghana. Right off the bat, my predictions were trashed. Now, it's just keep partying until the team is eliminated.

Also, look at Costa Rica and Mexico playing well. These are teams the US has played and beaten during the qualifying stages and they're doing well. US could just do just the same.
