Poll US Military to allow some illegal immigrants to enlist under new policy. Good idea or bad idea? (36 votes)

Good idea, give some illegal immigrants the opportunity to earn citizenship through the military. 58%
Bad idea, they broke the law coming here and their loyalties would come into question. 50%

Story.

According to the attached article, a small number if illegal immigrants will be allowed to join the military if they are eligible for Deferred Action for Child Arrivals, or DACA. DACA was based on an executive order passed by President Obama in 2012, which allowed many illegal immigrants who came to the US prior to the age of 16 to stay in the US and seek employment.

Immigrants who are approved to join under the program would join the military through the Military Accessions Vital to National Interest, or MAVNI program, which previously allowed some legal immigrants who were present in the US on a legal visa for at least two years and had a language or medical skill that the military needed. If a legal immigrant wasn't eligible for the MAVNI they would need a Green Card to enlist.

In terms of language skills, it is unlikely too many illegal immigrants from Mexico would qualify because the MAVNI usually doesn't focus on Spanish speakers since a lot of people currently in the military speak Spanish already, such as troops from Puerto Rico as well as other Spanish speakers who were already in the country legally when they enlisted. The focus on languages is based more on languages from Asia and the Middle East.

Do you think that it is a good idea to allow them to join? Or do you think that it would be a security risk to let illegal immigrants join the military?

Why not? They already fill a bunch of jobs that many citizens turn down. This is just more of the same.

How is this different than before?

Before this program illegal immigrants couldn't enlist since the days we had the draft and even then they could possibly be rejected.

Sure. Why not? Neither party is going to deport so many illegals as it is technically impossible, so I say let them. Of course the real problem is that they never will join anyway. I guarantee that most will think it is some trick and will not risk being identified for fear of deportation. It's exactly why illegals really also don't even try to vote, well, that and it's really not possible for them to anyway.

Anybody who would be eligible for this program would have already registered for DACA and if they registered for DACA then they have some faith in not being deported for giving their name to Uncle Sam. If it was some trick word would spread pretty quickly on pro-amnesty websites to warn illegal immigrants not to join just like it would spread not to register for DACA if it was a trick to deport people.

Not to mention when I was a recruiter I had illegal immigrants come up to me all of the time asking if they could join for citizenship, since they saw Latinos getting naturalized on TV in uniform and assumed that they were illegal before joining (the ones who were getting naturalized from military service were legal immigrants that joined with Green Cards).

Of course, there's the whole situation about needing medical skills (nursing degree or higher) or knowing a language the military needs in order to qualify and Spanish is not one of the languages in the program. At best, a few dozen illegal immigrants out of the millions we have in the country right now would qualify.

Will they be the first line of defense, just in front of the Black people?
