So the US and China have reached a deal to cut CO2 emissions and increase renewable energy, the US will cut emissions by 26-28% by 2025, and China will reach peak carbon emissions by 2030 as well as use 20% zero carbon emission sources in the same year.

Now I'm not going to lie this does not appear to be overly ambitious, considering that America was already set to cut emissions 25% by 2025 (if I remember correctly). That being said this is the first time China has agreed to cut emissions ever so that does excite me. I'm glad they are coming around to the idea that this needs to happen.

So what do you guys think?

This proves that global warming is a UN/communist/NWO hoax and that Obama is a maoist devil.

Well, he would be a total hypocrite if he approved the Keystone pipeline yet if he doesn't he would be going against a bill that has bi-partisan support and has broad support from the American people in poll after poll.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Policy aside, you can see the outline of a political push by Obama to combat the perception that he is a lame duck. First the net neutrality issue, now this plus maybe the EO on immigration (an Iran deal). Look for more announcements between now and the beginning of the new Congress.

These are the last gasp for air from a moribund presidency.

My guess is these negotiations (like most international negotiations) have been taking place for months or years, so I doubt that this has much to do with PR in the long run.

In order to meet the goal, China will need to produce more energy from clean renewable energy than all the coal plants in China that exist today, which is more than all the energy produced by the United States today. If China can do it, we can do it.

That's good news. Cleaner air and more efficient technologies is always a good thing. We have to start thinking about our future energy needs now, not years down the road. Luckily technology has exploded at such a rapid pace that efficient methods of transportation and energy production are now in the headlights.

I know, like doubling the number of troops in Iraq two days after the midterm elections.

Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids.

Well China is at least, hence it's recent 400 billion dollar gas deal with Russia. :/

@airshocker: Frankly, China needs this type of thing more than we do. They're destroying their own country at an alarming rate.

That doesn't mean that they're going to do anything about it, or that we should believe that they will. They lie about everything.

what i have said all along is that when your citizens are choking in the street you fix it.

it happened in los angeles 20 years ago and beijing now.

when you can actually see the problem right in front of you you can't deny it.

if people could see water and land pollution the same way as you can see air pollution they would do something about it.

That's a short term stop gap, not a permanent solution to energy consumption. Oil is a resource that will not be around by the turn of the century, at least not enough to satisfy worldwide energy needs. If countries do not begin moving away from oil now it will only become more difficult in the future. China's dependance on oil is a little more permanent right now because of their rapidly growing infrastructure, oil is the only resource that can currently meet growth demands. Eventually they also will have to make the switch away from oil, just as the United States and other 1st world countries should be doing right now.
