About damn time, too.

A pardon won't make this brilliant man come back, who knows what more he could have done to help the world. He deserved to live a happier life. I'm sure they're not stupid enough to just now realize how idiotic their beliefs were, although I wouldn't be surprised. It always infuriates me when a decision is made for stupid reasons, then the outcome of that decision ends up being terrible, then years later when nothing can be done to change what already happened, the faults of the decision were finally discovered by the morons who made it in the first place.
Does such a purely symbolic moves really matter? I can't think of a reason why it would........
Yes.
Such an insightful post. Thank you.

If you don't understand why symbolic things matter to different people, then there's nothing to explain.

From a practical perspective no, not really, but I don't understand how one could not see the implications beyond that. It is essentially a massive apology from the government admitting that they for lack of a better phrase, fucked up, and were wrong. Of course it does not change anything in the past, but is potentially significant in regards to how the UK's government will be viewed in the context of this event years from now, and arguably says something about the direction they want to head. Humans are very emotional creatures, so symbolic events do have meaning to us. In fact, many would argue that emotions dictate morality.

...yeah, this is pretty meaningless
@lamprey263: According to law, he did do something wrong.
you're an idiot
This is why I love OT.
@lamprey263: There is no reason to insult other users. Try to act like an adult.
I'm sorry you said the man did something wrong makes you a bigot in my view, I think I'm acting mature enough under the circumstances.
Thinking thegerg may not agree with the law but is just saying it was the law
And not in a way like saying the law is the law and you need to follow it, but actually just saying that it was the law and nothing more then that

Chill out, laws change all the time and some laws we have today will seem wrong or barbaric in 69 years time. By our standards today he did nothing wrong, by the the standards of the 1950s he did.
Its a good move though, he deserves the pardon.
I was watching a documentary on the British code breakers during WWII not too long ago and while they mentioned Alan Turing and his achievements, they conveniently failed to mention he was prosecuted for being gay and punished with chemical castration, which most likely contributed to his decision to commit suicide. They detailed the other famous code breakers post WWII life, so I thought that was interesting.
Thegerg is simple so you need to be very very precise in talking to him and understanding him
I'm convinced that it's got be be some kind of mental/developmental disorder. Maybe Asperger syndrome.
I am inclined to agree. His ability to communicate is also quite poor. He should hire an English tutor to help him deal with his comma splice problem.
