It seems if this article is factually correct then it is possible to travel forward in time by travelling at light speed away from earth, and then travelling back at light speed. I know that NASA have ideas on how to build a warp engine, but for now we have no fuel to power it. As soon as the fuel (exotic material) is discovered to power such a engine time travel will be possible but only forwards, i reckon travelling backwards in time is impossible.

That's quite an offensive term to use for the poor link :(

The problem I see with this is that it doesn't bring us any closer to time travel. I wouldn't be able to, say, conserve a yoghurt and eat it three years later, rather, I could buy it today, ship it off, and have it expire by my tomorrow, which would have been its two months or whatever... It's still really cool and hard to wrap my head around though :D

of course it is

The catch is that we need to find a way to travel at near light speed(99.99%)

Considering it is impossible for matter to travel at the speed of light, doesn't that make time travel likewise impossible?

If time travel was possible, I use it to go forward for one day, pick up a lottery ticket, go back to the present, and play the same number. I make a killing.

the quickest way to travel from A to B is to bend space so that A is next to B. Nothing hard about understanding that. That allows you to cover vast distances faster than the speed of light.

you don't need to travel at the speed of light, just near it. which in and of itself if not a trivial feat

Technically you don't even need to travel near the speed of light. This has already been measured empirically, and we don't have anything that goes near the speed of light.

Granted, you'd have to go near the speed of light to get big results, but the results happen regardless. People have literally done time travel into the future, even if only by fractions of a second.

And it is possible to travel time, just forwards, not backwards. You don't need to reach lightspeed to make it happen, which is why GPS satellites have countermeasures built in due to time travel

Astronomically speaking we live back in time, the photons in the sun ray that strikes your face this very instant left the sun 8.3 min ago and it actually were created a million years ago.

of course its possible~ all you need is -

stationary mass, temporal displacement unit powered by two top-spin, dual positive singularities, producing a standard off-set Tipler sinusoid

or

  • Two(2) magnetic housing units for the dual micro singularities
  • An electron injection manifold to alter mass and gravity of the micro singularities
  • A cooling and X-ray venting system
  • Gravity sensors, or a variable gravity lock
  • Four(4) main cesium clocks
  • Three(3) main computer units

and then you are good to go~

:)

Of course traveling forward in time is possible we are doing it right now. What you have to understand is time is relative and it travels at different speeds for different people depending on a variety of factors. The closer you get to the speed of light the slower time progresses for the traveler. Meaning everyone else will age significantly faster then you will. The only problem is the energy required to propel a craft to near light speeds. It's also important to remember that "warp drive" will not impart the same dilation effects as simply accelerating a craft through normal space. Because "warp drives" involve the manipulation of space time itself it's unclear if it would have any impact on the travelers perception of time, especially considering it is theoretically possible for a craft powered by such an engine to exceed the speed constraints of universal laws. Also don't forget dilation from the effects of gravity as well, which also can warp and change one's perception of time.

forwards possible. backwards impossible.

any universe in which backwards time travel would work would be too unstable to exist.

also, time is basically just a "waste" product of entropy.

and since entropy only moves one way so does time.

Warp drive will not let you travel in time at all since you wouldn't actually be moving, only the space around the ship.

I mean if this was the case then if you were to travel faster than light (which would be allowed with a hypothetical warpdrive) then you would not move backwards in time, as one might think, instead an imaginary amount of time would have passed. And that sounds a bit silly wouldn't you say?

Traveling forward through time was never the question. This has been known for decades.

The impossible thing has always been and remains to be traveling backwards in time.
